Pre-race routine:

Ate a PBJ about 2 hrs before, drank GUO2 periodically. Stayed at Motel 8 right down the road so it was a short drive. Got up the day before, went for a swim in ocean to get a feel. Felt great, then we drove the bike and run course. Pretty hilly with a major one on the back side of the lollipop.

I was getting pretty exccited, this was my first Olympic length tri. Didn't sleep all that great, but felt well rested in morning, took a little nap Friday afternoon.
Event warmup:

Went for a little jog around park and stretched constantly. My piriformis was acting up, so stretched that a lot.
Swim
  • 23m 19s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

I didn't push myself at all. I felt good, I was passing people, so I thought I was doing ok. I thought about my technique and such. But never really thought to slow down because I was going to hard. So I got into this pace that I just didn't want to get out of. I know I can swim a lot faster. But I was dogging my swimming in the week prior and never got that feeling of the race pace I wanted and that transpired into my race swim.
What would you do differently?:

PUSH HARDER. I need to mentally know better what a race pace feels like so I know where I need to be. I bet HR wasn't above 145 the whole time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

My socks gave me a little trouble getting on, nothing major. But I felt that's the only thing that slow me down.
What would you do differently?:

eventually learn to do this thing without socks
Bike
  • 1h 08m 23s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.80 mile/hr
Comments:

I was having fun out there, never really pushed myself to the edge. I kept picking people off 1 by 1. My power was down and the cadence was lower than I wanted it, so I know I had more in me if I wanted to dig down. But I only got passed twice, once at the very beginning by my friend who's a cat 3 cyclist racer and 1 guy on the back side on the major hill.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, I was happy being my first Tri at this length. I have lots of room for improvement since I didn't max out my thresholds.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

I cruised threw T2, my time was on the lower range of everyone else, so I'm happy with it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 45m 47s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm happy where I was, in my bricks I was around 43:30. So with the couple of big hills involved here, I'm knew I wasn't going to hitting that mark.
What would you do differently?:

Need to train on hills specifically more. There weren't many but they definitely took a punch out of me.
Post race
Warm down:

Just stretched and drank 2 Gritty's beers, they were free :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mentally, I need to become more aware of my thresholds and race pace. I definitely left some energy out there. But heck, this was my first one. 5 months ago, I didn't own a bike, hadn't swam more than 100 yrds since highschool and never ran more 4 miles. So I can only go up from here.

Event comments:

Can't wait until next year, definitely will be back. I did get a good cut on bottom of foot running from ocean to t1. I didn't notice it until after race, but had to go to first aid to get it wrapped up.
