Swim
  • 45m 36s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Time includes a long uphill transition. I dropped my goggles in the sand & then I jogged through most of it up to the transition area.

felt good overall. Felt cold & went a bit numb, but never overly painful.
What would you do differently?:

I'd learn to swim faster. :)
Transition 1
  • 05m 31s
Comments:

really took my time. I put on a pair of bike shorts over my tri shorts, a coat, gloves etc to battle the cold. I wanted to take my time to make sure that I had everything that I needed before embarking on such a long ride.
What would you do differently?:

Now that I know what to expect I think that I can push it harder next time.
Bike
  • 3h 22m 33s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.59 mile/hr
Comments:

I was really conscious that I had a half marathon at the end of this, so I didn't really press much. I kept a comfortable cadence and didn't hammer up the hills to make sure that I had legs for the run.
What would you do differently?:

I think that I did as well as I could have expected for my first HIM. Next time I would press more throughout the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

took my time. Had to take off everything and I didn't want to run in bike shoes knowing that my legs were so tired.

What would you do differently?:

transitioned with some sense of urgency.
Run
  • 2h 06m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

The first few miles the muscles in the front of my shin were locked up, as well as my right hamstring. I stopped to try to stretch them, but just couldn't make progress. After 3-4 miles I worked it out. the first 3 miles I ran a mile, then walked 50-100 yards. After that I started running 2 miles & walking 50-100 yards. When I reached 10 miles I had to walk every mile again, as well as up the steeper hills.
What would you do differently?:

I think that I could have managed to walk a lot less. I wanted to make sure that I could finish, but in retrospect I think that I could have completed the run with only a couple walking breaks - possibly none at all.

Event comments:

overall a fun race. The volunteers were GREAT! Everyone cheered - even the police officers! Great signs everywhere - and tons of water on the run.
