Pre-race routine:

Got there later than I wanted, long drive. Then had trouble getting myself organized, had to go back to the car twice. Stupid me.
Event warmup:

Gentle jogging around trying to get organized. No time for biking - and with wet weather probably would have skipped anyway. Swimming about 15 mins while waiting for race start - good idea, got used to cooler water temp.
Swim
  • 31m 9s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had trouble swimming in a straight line for the first portion. Didn't realize how string the current was for the first half of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Traffic jam at bike mount - very narrow, couldn't even run by and get on later. Led to slow start, but able to jump out in front shortly thereafter.
What would you do differently?:

Faster exit out of water.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 52s
  • 26 miles
  • 21.41 mile/hr
Comments:

Race was very bunched up - about 12 of us all at the same approx pace, and the collegiate kids didn't seem to know rules about blocking, drafting or the yellow line, which was really frustrating. Eventually let them run out in front with 5 miles to go, but was maddening for much of the race. Was able to hang with the guys on their fancy bikes though, which felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Get away from the pack. Preview the course, I had no idea how to pace myself, and the course was a mile longer than I thought it was.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Good transition, hard dismount, didn't look good, but didn't really lose significant time. Did stop and take time to drink, take in electrolytes, grab more gel. Cost time, but was worth it.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to unclip while going over speed bumps.
Run
  • 52m 4s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty happy really - I was passed by plenty of people, but managed to catch the few I set my sights on, and kept a pretty steady pace after the first (slow) mile. 52 min was best case scenario, so I was v happy with my time.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to improve brick workouts - that first mile is always so slow.
Post race
Warm down:

None - major stomach cramps, spent time in the medic tent laying down (which I'm not sure was so great). Took an hour for cramps to dissipate, so only ot a little walking around in. Missed out on that endorphin high...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sighting in swim, not knowing bike course, not doing brick workouts for transition to run, and overall not enough running.

Event comments:

Not enough USAT officials on hand - I've never seen so much blatant drafting and blocking on the bike course, mostly by the college kids. Was really a problem, I got stuck in a 10 - 12 person pack several times, with no way out.

Food lines were a disaster - had to wait nearly 30 mins to get food.

Very late by the time we got to awards.

Age Group: 7/15
Overall: 0/
Performance: Good
155 Avg HR - surprised with that, seems low. But good not wear myself out on the swim, this is usually high 160s into 170s.
Suit: Sleeveless wet suit
Course: From beach, upstream and into incoming tide; turn left head down stream with strong current - with tide pushing into shore and off course. Final left turn, back upstream, but at least with a little help from tides, though that wasn't quite pushing in the right direction. Also a fair amount of boat fuel in the water, pretty gross.

170 avg HR - high for me on the bike. Was worried with 5 miles to go that I was wearing myself out, so backed off a little and let the pack get away.
Wind: Some
Course: Hilly, and some less-than-great roads; gravel in wet conditions made the hard corners very challenging. Also last 1/4 mile had 8 freakin' speed bumps.
