Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 7am???? Because of the pool swim start - my start time wasn't skeduled until 0950. We thought it would go early becuase the race director said he was going to start folks with a 25 yds head start but allocated 1.5 minutes between swimmer. We got there early. Had the standard coffee and PBNJ, some HEED, 2 Enduralyte capsules,a multi vitmin, and 400 mg of Vitmin M
Event warmup:

Ran for 10 minutes got a sweat going, stretched a little, jumped on the bike for a check out of all the gears, fixed my transition area, lubed up the shoes and body, slipped on the wetsuit, and pressed to the pool. Saw H and the kids inside.
Swim
  • 11m 36s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 33s / 100 meters
Comments:

1st 200 felt felt - relaxed and then it went downhill from there. in the USAFA pool they have a mural on the wall that says "Where the air is rare" ..... it taunted me everytime I went by.
What would you do differently?:

swim more - I should have crushed this but it was the hardest. I guess the lesson learned is you have to do the event to get acclimatized
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

two spectator walked on to the course as I was trying to get my feet in to my shoes. hrumph!! No idea on transition time. My race belt got twisited and as I was running the bike out and swinging the number around it popped off. I stopped and quickly refastened but I stopped.
Bike
  • 46m 51s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall - me riding the course would have paid some good dividends as I could have attacked the hills a little more and some of the turns. Overall - a little below LT should have been above for a sprint but I'm happy with the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Good transition but tough to get everything set. you have about 50 yds of level ground before the dismount line to get your feet out. The last foot popped out just before slamming the brakes on at the dismount line. Hopped off and everything else went smooth.
Run
  • 21m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Totally should have pushed it. Still hard to figure out pace here. Nobody passed me but I should have been hammering. Downside of the staggerd swim start.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder early. There was a steep hill almost right out of T2 and some cadet was running up slowly. I pulled back the effort as I didn't know the course and what my pace should be. I should have hammered and given some Go Navy beat Air Force crack as my old 35 yrs old butt smoked him going up a hill.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing - Find the kids and H

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pace and course knowledge

Event comments:

Totally fun sprint - All the negatives were my own. Next year I'm sure that they will have the swim start times figured out and it will be more of a race instead of a TT.

Had a HR ave of 168 which is just slightly below LT. I should have pushed a little harder going up the hills.
Wind: Little
Course: Single loop over 1300 feet of total climbing. I hit 40+ going down a couple hills. the back 1/2 was pretty much all up hill, nothing crazy steep but you knew you were going up hill. The course itself was drop dead beautiful. The volunteers on the course knew what they were doing and kept everybody safe. Totally cool to have a aid station on a sprint. Probably unneccessary but I liked it. The AFA is a great place for a race.

Course: single loop on gravel / asphault trail through the grounds of the academy. Once again - way cool and way gorgeous. Finishing on the USAFA track was also really impressive and fun. Great volunteers - Water station folks actually knew how to give a cup of water. Not the normal spill half of it on the handoff.
