Swim
Comments: The swim felt good. I rounded the first bouy wide and since I breath on my right I just kept some yellow caps in sight so I knew I wasn't drifing too far out. There were a few kicks and bumps but overall not too bad. I caught some swimmers from the first group at the last bouy and someone from the group behind me swam right over top of me at the turn. The entire time I was wondering if I was pushing too hard, not hard enough....it is really hard to pace yourself. It was an extremely hard run to the transition area through the sand, about 400 yards. What would you do differently?: Not much. the wide first turn kept me out of the log jam and overall the swim felt good. Need to train more because my arms were getting extremely tired near the end of the swim. Transition 1
Comments: Pathetic. I'm not even sure where it all went wrong. 4.5 minutes. I've been trying to figure out what took so long but I can't figure it out. Dropped the sunglasses and they broke, thank goodness there was a back-up pair laying there. Daniel gave me the tip of taping the goo packets to the bike. This really helped. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure. Maybe no socks but it didn't take that long to put them on. Practice, practice, practice. Take only on bottle on the bike for the ride. Bike
Comments: Passed a lot of people on the hills, they passed me back on the flats. Significant thigh burn. Averaged nearly 19 mph, pretty happy with that. What would you do differently?: More interval training. Need to get my average speeds up. Transition 2
Comments: Much better T2 than T1. The speed laces really helped. Run
Comments: Right calf started to cramp up. Slid my knee brace down and it went away. It felt like everyone was passing me on the run. The first mile was brutal and it didn't get much better until I passed mile marker #2. After that I felt like it was the home stretch and even picked up the pace a little. To my surprise I finished the run in under 25 minutes, about 3 mintues faster than my training times. It felt like I was crawling. What would you do differently?: Learn how to drink while running. I gulped down some water at the turn around spot and thought I was going to hurl. What's the trick? Post race
Warm down: Recovered remarkably fast. Ate some oranges and bananas and drank some water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Transitions, thigh burn on the bike. Event comments: Can't wait to do it again. Last updated: 2008-09-24 12:00 AM

This was my first tri so I was very nervous. I must have packed and repacked 4 or 5 times because I was afraid of forgetting something; helmet, shoes, wristband. Then I couldn't find my swim cap and had to completely unpack everything to find it. The car was finally loaded and ready to go by about 10:00 p.m. The car was packed and sleep came much easier than expected. Breakfast was a peanut butter and banana sandwhich on wheat with a cup of coffee. I picked up Daniel at around 4:20 so we could get there early and scope things out. We arrived at about 5 and the parking lot was very empty. We pulled out the bikes, grabbed our bags of stuff and headed for the transition area. It was still dark so it was difficult to set up. I grabbed the end of a rack for easy access. Daniel and I walked around the area to get a better feel for the in/out areas and how it would all flow. By now it was getting light out so I went back and set up my bike/run stuff. I few late-comers came in and I got a few good pointers from them on the transitions including the right way to rack the bike.
I went for about a 1/2 mile run down the strand and came back and stretched a little. I was sipping gatorade to hydrate. We donned our wetsuits and headed down the beach. Many people were swimming to get warmed up, we didn't.
