Pre-race routine:

Woke-up and had my usual breakfast so I could hit the road. Got to the marina early enough to quickly drive the run/bike course along with a bunch of other folks... Did packet pick-up and then got my stuff from the car. Set-up my transition area (my 1st tri so kept it very simple!) and walked back to the car for a bananna.
Event warmup:

Got in the water for a 5 minute swim...not much but just trying to feel the water temp and get my head together...
Swim
  • 13m 46s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the third wave off (3 mins between waves...). I got off to a slow start---just trying to get my sighting and stroke going. I quickly was into the wave in front of me and I just couldn't get it going like I would have liked to---having difficulty sighting and avoiding people at the same time (hit a couple of the bouys real well but then ended up more to the outside to just avoid the fray...). At one point as you came around to the right you were sighting right into the sun---I couldn't see anything and pretty much just hung with a guy in my wave until the final turn into the finish. At the end my legs must have been colder then I thought because they took a couple steps in the water to come around...tried to pick-up my kick a little towards the end to avoid this buuuttttt..........
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time training for the swim (having a swimming background--15+ years ago caused me to not spend the bulk of my time on swimming...). Try to get more open water swimming done in a lake...
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Felt pretty good about this transition (the first one I've ever done!!!). I was able to find my spot with no problem off the swim and made quick work of getting socks and shoes on (I was a little nervous about this part).
What would you do differently?:

Not much---felt pretty good about how quickly I got this done and my set-up.
Bike
  • 37m 13s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.04 mile/hr
Comments:

Well this was the area that I was most concerned/unsure about since I just started riding a bike a couple of months ago and was pushing my 15 year old MTB around this course!!! It was a short loop with little to no hills so that worked out well for me. My legs felt a little cold from the swim but I felt pretty good on the bike---my cadence was higher then usual but I just figured that was due to racing. I was happy with my shifting and riding in general. I saw LOTS of really nice/expensive bikes (was kind of intimidated when I pulled in the parking lot in the AM and saw soooo many super nice bikes and knowing that I was on my old MTB) a few passed me but I actually was able to pass some of them and hang with others so I was pretty happy!!
What would you do differently?:

Not much...I was pretty pleased.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

This felt like a really good transition (again this was my first tri so...) I was able to get my bike put up quickly and had my running shoes on just as quickly and off I went---right out to the end of the transition area when then I realized I FORGOT my number (I had put my belt/number under my running shoes so that it wouldn't blow away or get tangled and I was going so quickly I never even saw it there...)!!!!!!! $@#@# so back I went and grabbed my belt with number and out to the run.....I figure it cost me about 20+ seconds (which would have put my 10th in AG overall.....oh well!!!)
What would you do differently?:

Ummm well let's see------NOT forget my stupid race number!!!!!! Actually I'm very pleased with the set-up of my transition area (thanks to all the reading here!!) and had the number well placed I was just getting ahead of myself...
Run
  • 21m 10s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Well considering that I've always said that I don't run and that I never would---I thought this could be my weak point until I began to train for this tri. I felt good once I got OUT of transition (I was able to very quickly put my number mistake out of my head and just run). I tried to get a good pace going while getting my breathing under control and felt I did a good job of that coming up the exit of the marina to the main road. Then it was a good run along two roads that were pretty well shaded which made for a nice run. Got passed by a couple of people but was able to pass a few too so I felt like I had a good run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing---good run for me (a non-runner;) )!
Post race
Warm down:

They were handing bottled water right at the finish line so I drank that while walking around and then went for a 5-10 min warm down swim...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mistake in T2...not sighting better/swimming easy.

Event comments:

This was a great tri---especially for a first timer!! Lake Anna is a real nice place and this time of year seems real quiet. The weather was perfect for an October race. I can definitely see myself doing this race again.
