Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 7:30 to let the dog up and get the day started. One of the nice things about this race is that because of the pool swim and the fact they start slower swimmers first, you don't have to be at the race at the butt crack of dawn. Got loaded up and left the house around 9 to head down to Whitewater. I made sure to say goodbye to my Garmin and watch as I headed out the door so that my end of the deal would be held up. More of that later. Rolled in to town shortly after 10 and unloaded everything, went over to registration, and setup transition. Wandered inside and sat with Danielle for a while, said hi to schmize and Holly, and just chilled out a little. Around 11 I went out and took the bike for a short spin to make sure everything was good to go as I did not want to have another Pewaukee incident. Saw the Cowdy crew on the way out and tried to help Josh with a wheel issue that he got taken care of.
Event warmup:

Swam a couple of laps in the diving well(warm up pool) to practice my flip turns and to make sure that my tritop wasn't going to slow me down to much
Swim
  • 07m 33s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Waz seeded third in my lane and based on time from at least one other guy in my lane I knew I was going to be on him like white on rice. About 2.5 laps in I started getting really close, so I drafted off of him for another length and then turned it on to pass him. Just after I passed him I could tell I was close to the next guy, so I started to just try to get in the draft zone and make the most of it. Took about 3 more lengths and I was around him. Just cruised the rest of the way, which came back to bite me, but more later.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Half T1 is included in the swim, and half in the bike. A couple people in the wave that I started in got out of the water before me, but I had a blazin T1, I wish I knew the time just for that, but it was fast, I think 5 got out before me and I passed all of them in T1.

Comments:

Took off out of transition and started hammering right away. I knew that without my Garmin I didn't know what was going to happen on the run so I had to make up asa much time as possible on the bike where I am a little better at going by feel. I am sure my HR was through the roof as a couple of times I had to let up so that I didn't feel like my heart was going to pop out of my chest. Legs felt crappy for some reason like I was lacking some more power that I think is there. Not sure what is entirely responsible, but I blame some on poor workout choices this week.

Didn't get passed at all.
What would you do differently?:

Not much really
Transition 2
  • 00m
What would you do differently?:

Not put socks on. I that may have cost me 10 crucial seconds.
Run
  • 25m 14s
  • 3.12 miles
  • 08m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Well this is what it all came down to. Ran out of T2 and immediately started to have some cramping issues, I mean S$#@ it is a sprint, why in the hell am I having cramps. Groin, quads, calves, everything, kept running though as I was on a mission. Finally about .5 miles in they went away, but they stayed in my memory. Here is the only place that not having my Garmin hurt me, I need to know my pace when I am running, I just do it makes me feel better. I was just running, which was nice, but I had no idea. I felt like I was running fast, but I was kinda comfortable, so it wasn't fast enough, but I didn't want to blow up. All of that was running through my head. I only got passed by 1 person on the run and he was in a relay so it doesn't count.
What would you do differently?:

Run 10 seconds faster
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around and eat some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not gonna say it.

Event comments:

I had 2 goals for this race and I achieved one of them The first one as posted in my blog was to finish top 5 OA. I did that finishing 5th. My second goal was to finish 1st in my AG and I missed by 10 F'ing seconds. The worst thing about it is I got beat by the same person that beat me last year. I know have my own Charles Benson, mine is much less famous, but none the less, Brian D&($#, you are MY Charles Benson and I will beat you one day.
