Pre-race routine:

Got there super early and set up transition area. Sat and read part of a book called The Wise Heart which is a book about Buhdist philosophy and psychology. It is very helpful for me mentally especially when I start to "go dark." Ate 1/2 a cliff bar and lsitened to my Ipod. Prepace songs include Daughtry and Rage Against the Machine
Event warmup:

Plyo warm up and stretch by James.
  • 13m
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters

I totally panicked on the swim. I started out way too fast and about 3/4 to the first buoy almost thought about bagging the race. I started to breath stroke around the 1st buoy and then flipped onto my back until I got to the second buoy. I almost certain that if I hadn't panicked I would have won the event for the women.
What would you do differently?:

Not panic during the swim and take a better pace.
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s

This transition would have been great if I didn't think I needed my race belt for the bike. I got to the start line of the bike and realized I had left my race belt. Totally a mistake, because I didn't need it, but I went back anyway to put it on. It probably cost me over a minute and a top 3 finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget race belt or just keep going and leave it.
  • 38m 14s
  • 11.18 miles
  • 17.54 mile/hr

This is probably the bike of my life. This is a very challenging course and I rode the course yesterday as part of a 60 mile ride. Needless to say, my legs were screaming the entire time. However, I never really pushed myself on the bike and still managed to get in a decedent performance.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little more during the bike and take the gel at the beginning instead of 1/2 way in. Not ride 60 miles the day before on a very difficult course.
Transition 2
  • 01m

Probably my best T2 transition ever. It was really fast.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I think this was the best ever. I could probably learn to dismount a little better though.
  • 24m 2s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 44s  min/mile

I hate this run...I cannot stress that enough - I hate this run. I hate trail running and I particularly hate this run (flashbacks to my first duathlon where the winds were like 25 mph). I have trained this course a little so I was very familiar with it, but I hate this run. I was fortunate enough to meet "Mike" along the way and he ran with me the entire time. We traded stories about racing and he really pushed me at the end - for which I was totally appreciative. But again...I hate this run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - overall the run was really good for me although I probably could have pushed the last half of it a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got some refreshment and went home. My whole family came out to see me and my son ended up with an injury so that took priority over any post race activity.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

60 mile bike ride the day before; deciding to do this race at the last minute and not tapering; 4 hours of sleep the night before

Event comments:

I hate this course but will probably do this race again at some point
