Swim
Comments: This was definitely my best swim in a race and probably one of my better open water swims period. My wave was fairly small and I didn't have much problem navigating around other people. I was able to do the crawl from the start and found myself a nice open area on the inside. The only trouble I had sighting was when I rounded the turn buoy; it took me a couple minutes to find the next one. By the halfway point the next wave started catching up and swimming over me but I stuck to my breathing every 2-3 strokes and stayed on course really well. I got a side cramp a little past the halfway point which has never happened before but it didn't really bother me and went away before I reached the shore. Transition 1
Comments: I got my arm stuck in my wetsuit b/c I had my cap and goggle in my hand but the wetsuit stripper helped with that. I couldn't get clipped into my pedals (I think because of the mud I picked up in transition) so I started the bike using my heels. What would you do differently?: Take the top of my wetsuit off before taking my goggles and cap off. I forgot to put my number on until I was halfway out of transition but I think next time I might wait to put it on til the run b/c it kind of bothered me on the bike. Bike
Comments: I thought I was taking it easy but that was one of my fastest bikes ever, I think because of all the downhills. My quads were tired at the start but I actually felt better further into the ride. After Devil's Hill where I was in my lowest gear and still standing up the rest of the hills felt relatively easy. I don't think I hit my brakes at all until about mile 23. The bike was a little lonely but overall I enjoyed myself. I had a peanut butter crackers right off the bat and then ate half of my pb&j at 45 mins and the other half at an hour and half. I drank about 16oz of gatorade. What would you do differently?: I ate the second half of the sandwich too close to the end of the ride. Maybe try some of the hills in a higher gear, I kind of meandered up them. Transition 2
Comments: I had a quick drink of water and opted to stick my gel in my pocket rather than eat it right then. What would you do differently?: Rack my bike forwards instead of taking the time to get it under the rack and hang it by the seat. Run
Comments: My stomach didn't feel to hot, I think I ate the last half of my sandwich too late in the bike, so I skipped my gel and stuck to drinking water. I started out too fast and had to slow down after the first mile. I enjoyed the run but I was rather warm and spent too much time focusing on my stomach and worrying about my shins. This was the farthest I have run since early March. What would you do differently?: Start out slower. Train more. Post race
Warm down: Had a bottle of water and some watermelon. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run training. No one to push me on the bike. Event comments: It was a beautiful day and a fun, well-organized and pretty course. This was the first race I've done that started on time and seemed well organized throughout.
