Swim
Comments: Swimming through the waves was pretty tough. I kind of did a swim, swim, swim, walk, walk pattern early on. I eventually got to mostly swimming, although I did walk quite a bit. What would you do differently?: Not walk so much. It's really difficult to find those conditions to practice in. Transition 1
Comments: Was a little dizzy while taking off my wetsuit - I almost fell over. My transition place was 22 overall, not bad! What would you do differently?: Maybe practice getting out of my wetsuit while tired. Bike
Comments: We had a pretty good tailwind for a while and then zig-zagged back to the shore into the wind. There was a guy riding in the middle of the road going out, making people pass him on the right - I told him to get to the right as I passed him (way out on the left). Later, right as I was getting ready to pass someone, a guy behind me yelled, "on your left." I glanced back and he was still about a bike-length back, so I went ahead with my planned pass of the guy in front of me. As we both were passing the slowest rider of the three of us, he was yelling at me about blocking him. As there was plenty of room for us both to go around the slowest guy, I said back to him, "good heads up, way to avoid me during my pass." I'm not sure enough about triathlon rules to know if I could have been penalized for blocking, but I feel he had plenty of room to pass and enough reaction time to get around me. What would you do differently?: I feel I raced this part as good as my conditioning allowed. Transition 2
Comments: I rested a little bit during T2 and my overall place showed that: 227. I downed a salt tablet with a Zip Fizz and took off. What would you do differently?: Get some sort of salt tablet dispenser that I can carry with me to take while on the course and not in transition. Run
Comments: I was running slightly faster than last week at Naylor's, but I was slower than last year's Osprey pace. I dropped a minute on both the bike and run - I guess the windy conditions took more out of me than I realized. What would you do differently?: I need to spend more time running (and bricking). Post race
Warm down: Not much of a warm down. Met up with Steve and we watched our other friends come in. I ate lunch at the end of the pier, enjoying the view! What limited your ability to perform faster: The wind, but that limited everyone. I need to train more consistently. Event comments: Well supported "little" race, and it raises money to preserve the bay - I love crabs!! I'm very thankful to my company for making a donation to the Maryland Coastal Bays program. Met up with my brother-in-law and two other high school friends at the Bay Bridge. Got to Ocean City a little late due to all the beach traffic. Picked up the race packets, checked into the hotel, and grabbed a pasta dinner.
I was the first one up a had my coffee and ensure shake. When we got to the race site, I jogged a little, had a Red Bull and Gu, and squeezed into my wetsuit.
