Run
Comments: Having never run in anything, I had one goal. Finish this thing! I didn't remember has many hills from the graph as there actually were, or perhaps I didn't realize one was as steep as it was. The plan was to run for 1 and walk for 4 until I made it across the finish line. Well, I started off running for 2. I had to do some weaving to get away from the pack a bit. There was a little boy that was running with two adults, but I was determined not to get beat by that kid. Every time I turned around, he was right there. I wish I could have bottled up some of his energy!! Before the race started, Kelly had told Chris that I could do it in 45 minutes! I thought she was crazy! Our practice run last weekend, I barely finished in just under 50 minutes...how was I going to shave 5 minutes from that. But, that pesky little kid gave me what I needed to keep pushing forward. Then I was nearing the end, or so the crowds were saying. I was still skeptical until I heard Chris. I heard him before I saw him, then I looked at my watch and saw that it was 43 and change and said holy crap I might actually come close to Kelly's prediction. So, I kicked it up a notch and then when I thought I was a goner, I heard my name being announced and the crowds were cheering...a burst of momentum hit me and I said to myself, you can do this...and I did! I had a couple volunteers ask if I was ok...apparently the red face, gasping for air tends to worry people! Then, as I was off to the side letting them take my chip off my shoe, I noticed a photographer laying on the ground taking a picture. I told the man that he was mighty brave laying down next to me as I was barely able to stand still long enough for them to grab the chip, before I thought I was going to fall over! But, then I heard Chris and was greeted with a hug. What would you do differently?: Perhaps make life altering decisions with more time to plan/train accordingly! Post race
Warm down: Chris and I wandered around the tents and picked up some free stuff and chatted about how crazy it was that I just did what I did. Then we walked back over to where Chris had been waiting for me and waited for Kelly. What limited your ability to perform faster: simply out of shape and had never run before last weekend when I did a practice with Kelly. Event comments: there was only 1 water/gatorade station for us 5Kers, I personally would have liked at least one more, but having never participated and having nothing to compare to, this was great! parked at the first lot I came across that I noticed other racers coming out of. Didn't quite realize how much of a walk I had to the park, but it was good.
