Pre-race routine:

Only my third open 10K ever and first in a year. Last year (same month, different race) I ran a 45:59 for a PR. Since then, though, I've run a 44:10 10K tri run segment in an Oly in late June. So I was pretty clear that I had a sub-44 PR on tap. My goal was to go under 7:00/mile for the first time for the distance (i.e., sub 43:25).

My wife, Liz, was registered for the race as well--it was going to be her first 10K (she's run two 12K's and a half marathon, though)--but she came down with a bad cold and decided to switch to the 5K today.

We got up around 5:20 and got ready. Liz had a Disney Studios screening and reception invite for the two of us requiring us to bail from the race site right after I finished, so we parked near the finish of this point-to-point race and had a 15 minute walk to the start (which is a good warmup for me, actually).

Saw DoloresM2 and her daughter and father...they were in the 5K with Liz. 5K was scheduled for 7:30; got underway at 7:35, leaving me 25 minutes to warmup.
Event warmup:

It was great having the time for a good warmup. Did a full set of my usual stretches and got in a lot of nice relaxed strides. I've been fighting left arch and Achilles issues, but felt good today.

Comments:

Went out a little too fast (around 6:15-6:30), but dialed it back gradually over the second half-mile. Settled in betw. 6:30 and 6:55 for the flat sections at the start. At two miles, calculated that I could run what I knew was the two-mile generally uphill section at around 7:10-7:15/mile and still have a good shot at 43:24, given the downhill finish.

Seeded myself pretty well...got passed by a few folks, passed a few myself.

Mile 4 (the most uphill section) was tough...my pace per Garmin 205 was trending upwards of 7:30 and I was breathing hard. But I felt good and I was relying on the boost I'd get turning around at four miles and heading downhill towards the ocean.

Sure enough, after the turnaround, I was consistently 6:30-6:50/mile. The math said I would have to have a strong kick to hit my goal, but I thought I had it today.

There were only 3 water stations on the course (miles 2, 3 & 5)...water only. Grabbed a gulp of water at 3 & 5 only. That's about all I usually take on a 10K, esp. if the weather is mild as it was today.

About 1/2 mile from the finish, a younger guy came up on me and passed. I'm thinking, "No, you didn't!" I doubted he had the remaining gear I had...I was right...about 1/4 mile left, with finish line in sight, I turned it up the last notch (I was at about 5:45 pace) and left the guy in the dust.

Looking at my Garmin, I had really no room to relax, so I kept the hammer down right through the finish. Clock shows 43:24 as I cross the mat. Garmin shows my chip time as 43:20 (official result is 43:19.6)! PR and sub-7:00 pace mission accomplished!
What would you do differently?:

As always: Not go out quite so fast. But it didn't really hurt me...I ran to what I was pretty sure was my potential going in.
Post race
Warm down:

Liz was waiting at the finish (she did well in the 5K given that she couldn't really breathe with her chest cold). Long walk to the post-race party. Had one pancake, one banana, two mini Clif Bars. Then had to head right to the car to head for the gala "green carpet" premiere of the new "TinkerBell" movie (Liz managed the broadcast ad campaign for this release-on-DVD). Much as I'd liked to have stayed, the "TinkerBell" reception after the screening was definitely more...um...plush?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. My weight is about 3 lbs over where I try to keep it and I'm still training through nagging injuries, but neither was a factor, I don't think.

Event comments:

Third year for this growing 5K/10K event which attracts a pretty decent elite field (and offers some prize money). Course is relatively flat (very flat for the 5K) and pretty much forces you to negative split the last 2+ miles. Almost no expo, surprising for an event with around 2000 athletes, but they do throw in a "pancake breakfast" and some live music.
