Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30AM. I was very lucky I woke up on my own because the alarm clock did not work. Ate some cereal, was on the road at 5:00. Got to race site at about 6:30. Had plenty of time to get everything together and start the 1/2 mile walk to the race site. Since they didn't post the race numbers on the web site, they had someone provide race numbers from a list as you walked up to the transition. Was able to rack the bike and start laying things out before standing in line for race packet etc. Everything went smoothly with regard to getting everything done. The only thing that went wrong is I forgot my towel. It actually wasn't a big deal because I have simplified my transition area so much that I really don't need a towel anymore. The guy across the rack from me forgot his goggles and I was able to let him borrow the set I use at the pool (I wear the mask type for racing). I was glad I could help. I believe I met SPOT at the rack but didn't know it at the time. Later I overheard him introducing somebody else to FGUMP; then I saw the SPOT on his calf. I was going to introduce myself but had an anti-social attack.
Event warmup:

Not much warm up other than running back and forth to get all the stuff done. Not that I was running late, but I usually run back and forth instead of walking for the "kill two birds with one stone thing".
Swim
  • 32m 2s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

Could not see bouy's because of fog. Only remember one turn bouy. Found out later the other one deflated. Managed to maintain stroke the whole way and just followed everyone else. I felt comfortable and competent yet I am still slow! I am not sure what to do about my swimming. It's really holding me back.
What would you do differently?:

Really need to work on my swimming. I think I have decent form but I need to work on my speed. Training consistancy is certainly the main problem.
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

A little slow getting out of wet suit.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 4s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike ride went well. I was in cruise mode when 3 young ladies zipped by me. It gave me a kick in the a@@ I needed and I put the hammer down and passed them and several dozen more people. That was the last time I was passed at all for the remainder of the ride. The bike felt great! I think I have my position optimized now. I had plenty of power in the aero position. I have the headset as far down as I can get it and still feel aerodynamic, comfortable and strong. I felt like I was ballanced on the seat perfectly; unlike last race where I had it tilted forward too much.
I felt like I could have gone a bit faster, but not by much. Dismount went well and I did not lose a shoe this time. I'm glad I swapped my light action with the zero pedals for this race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Decent transition. The bike next to my spot was knocked down and partially in the way. Didn't slow me down too much but it certainly distracted me.
Run
  • 54m 9s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Run went fair. About as good as expected considering the lack of running. I believe my running days are numbered. I do believe running at 200+ pounds for 20+ years takes it's toll on the body. Much more so than smaller framed people. I did run the entire distance at a constant pace without walking. I may be doing more relays next year with my 15 min 5k runner.
What would you do differently?:

I would say run more but....
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and ate a hot dog; walked around some more and ate another hot dog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Incosistant swimming and run training limitations.

Event comments:

Pinehurst is always a fun race and it's a great way to wrap up a season.
