![]() Swim
Comments: This was a really, really awful swim for me. I couldn't see anything underwater, which threw me off. After rounding the buoy, my goggles fogged up and I couldn't see much above water either. I felt like I could barely breathe in the wetsuit, and swam most of 2nd half on my back so I could suck enough air. If the swim had been much longer, I would have been screwed. What would you do differently?: More preparation, maybe warming up/down in the water beforehand so that my face doesn't freeze off. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Would've been considerably faster if I came out of the swim with a little more 02 in my blood, but the transition area was small so I found my stuff quickly. What would you do differently?: Sockless tri shoes would help a lot, plus maybe waiting until I was en route to take in some gel. ![]() Bike
Comments: Went really well. I stayed in the aerobars for most of the time, drank a pretty good amount of water, and passed a lot of people (cheering each one on). What would you do differently?: Maybe push myself a little bit harder. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: The yankz worked out great. Overall it was pretty simple. I had a little trouble resetting my forerunner 405, but that only wasted 10 seconds or so. What would you do differently?: Pretty straightforward. There's room for improvement in my bike dismount (only worth a couple of seconds) and getting out of my shoes (another few seconds). ![]() Run
Comments: Went really well. I wasn't counting on my taper to give me much speed, especially considering I've never run so soon after biking that hard (not to mention the swim), but my per-mile averages were 30-60 seconds faster than I hoped they would be, and I was anticipating (conservatively) running almost 90 seconds slower. The pacing turned out to be perfect, as the last 1/4 mile I had to really focus to keep it together. What would you do differently?: Other than continuing to train, nothing. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Walking around a little bit, taking in gu and chocolate hemp milk, electrolyte fluid, and sport chews. What limited your ability to perform faster: The swim was absolutely awful. Event comments: Very nice, low-key beginner's race. Not too competitive, not stuffy at all. Still, a little more organization could have helped. It was also pretty low-tech. Morning smoothie: 1 banana, ~1/2c strawberries, 1/2 packet açai, ~2 1/2c coconut water, 1/4 serving Vega smoothie infusion. One can of Steaz orange, plenty of water (had to stop to urinate 4 times on the way to the race).
Minimal--about 1/4 mile on the bike to make sure everything worked. A serving of Gu Roctane 15 minutes before the swim.
