The attack was simple. Go out fast and then when the heat hit I would slow down so I would not over heat. I lined up to run the the 5:30s but ended up catching and running with the 5:00s. I missed my 10k pr by 14 secs. I beat my half marathon PR by 5:18. I was at about mile 15.5 when the race went Red. I was worried since they were like we are now at a high alert and be prepared to be stopped and redirected. This only means one thing. Run FASTER. So the girl and I that I was running with we picked up the pace. I knew we needed to get to the turn to the south side of the course. Once we were on the southern section we slowed down again. We figured if they "canceled" the race we would be far enough along that we would finish. We started to walk some. I felt sick alot probably from too much gatorade. I felt terrible and my head was hurting from time to time. The girl I was with could not walk or she would cramp up so we ran alot still. I finally at around mile 21 convinced her to do more of a run walk. We would walk up the hills and we would walk for about 300 feet and then run for about 600 feet. She knew early I wanted to PR and she kept asking where we were and how much time we had left so I could PR. I had about 13 - 15 minutes to PR at the last mile. I knew that hill was going to hurt. We ran the last 1/2 at around a 10 min pace which was hard to do. We needed some time in the bank. Sure enough Mt Saint Roosevelt was bigger than ever. Yes its WAY WAY bigger than heart break hill. (Atleast it seems that way). I moved fast up the hill by walking. once on the top of the hill my friend took off running and so did I. She did not wait for me but having 4 - 5 minutes left to PR I felt pretty good. I took off running and I was able to beat my pr by 1:30. What would you do differently?: sped up to get a new 10k PR. :). Maybe make sure my HR was linked to me so I could actually use it Post race
Warm down: I sat around. I had a beer, drank alot of water, and ate chips. I took 1 salt tab, sports legs, and 3 vit I (iboprophen) What limited your ability to perform faster: the heat. Event comments: They really improved things this year. I even got water from imprompt water stations that handed out water bottles. They really seemed to be on the ball this year. Last year was a shame but if they keep up what they did this year then it is worth it for the runners. This year was really a testament to how last year could have been like if they did there job.
