Pre-race routine:

This was my first tri so I was a bit nervous that I would be pressed for time for chip pick up, marking, etc. I woke my wife and son up at 5:50 to leave. On the way I ate a banana and drank some Gatorade and water. I had packed everything on Fri night so I wouldnt be scrambling around.
Event warmup:

Stretched a little bit before the swim. I was swim number 293 so I had an hour to observe others. There was a warm up pool, but it was 10 degrees warmer than the swim pool and with the wind and cool conditions outside, I wasnt about to get into that thing and then freeze standing around.
Swim
  • 04m 18s
  • 250 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim is clearly my strong suit right now. I passed about 6 people coming out of the water. I was worried about going too hard to fast but it felt comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Submit a more accurate time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

My bike was about in the middle of the transition area. Luckily, I was the end bike on my rack. I think that helped. I wasnt too worried about time as this was my first tri. I also put on another pair of shorts as it was cold and windy. Also, since I am riding a cluncker, I put on my running shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Not put on another pair of shorts.
Bike
  • 44m 21s
  • 10 miles
  • 13.53 mile/hr
Comments:

OK- I am a turtle on the bike now. I admit it. Since my longest ride was about 10 miles before the race anyway, I wasnt going to sweat it. There were a couple areas where the road surface was rough. There were two hills that just wore me out.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more. Nuff said.

Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Just had to rack the bike and but the race belt on.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Run
  • 31m 33s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Nice course through a nice neighborhood. People outside to cheer us on. I did take water at every station (3) and walked to drink it. That did blow my time up. But I felt good throughout.
What would you do differently?:

Do some longer runs. Add some speed workouts in also. I will work on this in the winter. Learn to drink and run or dont take as much.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around just for a minute or two. Talked with Jeff who also did the race. Met up with my wife and son. Drank Gatorade and Propel. Had to leave fairly quickly due to my daughter cheering at a football game.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My first tri and I felt good. I wasnt out to impress anyone but me and I did that. I am hooked, however. I cant wait for the 09 calender to come out.

Event comments:

Loved it. Cant wait to do this one and others next year.
