Swim
Comments: Another pretty bad swim. I spent a lot of time visualizing a comfortable swim, spent a lot of time with my face in the water to get used to the cold, and I just really tried to relax to start the race. That went out the window pretty quick. Couldn't catch my breath, couldn't get a good stroke. I kept going, though, and I was able to turn it on for the last leg. What would you do differently?: Practice more. Transition 1
Comments: No problems with transition. Bike
Comments: This course was mostly smooth, but there is one section at the end of the loop that has some decent climbing but, unfortunately, really hacked up road. Other than that, it's pretty nice. There are some pretty technical turns at the bottom of some descents, which kills you speed but it's not unbearable. Overall a pretty fun ride ... but don't let anyone kid you, it's not "mostly flat". What would you do differently?: Good ride for me. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Pathetic run for me. I thought I had really stepped up my ability by training for the run much harder since my first tri a month and a half ago, but it was just as weak. Got off the bike and had no legs ... just shuffled along. I actually stopped a few times to walk 10 yards or so. Made the turn around and felt a little better, even picked up some speed but not much. One good point is that I saw an age grouper ahead of me towards the finish line, and I was able to sprint the last 100 yards or so to pass him. Minor victory, but I'll take it. What would you do differently?: Train more! My running volume is getting there, but I have to do more bricks. Post race
Event comments: The only negative is that there was some early confusion amongst the volunteers, but I was there real early and they were still getting set up (in the dark), so I'll give everyone a lot of slack on that. By sunrise, things looked to be running smooth and there were a lot of nice volunteers everywhere. Last updated: 2008-10-22 12:00 AM

Drove up from Carlsbad, leaving at around 4:15am. Drank WAY less coffee this time, ate some carbs around 6:30am. Was the first person in the transition area and set up with just about no one else around.
Some stretching, mostly just walking around the venue and taking in the sights. I did spend a good amount of time in the lake to get used to the water.
