Swim
Comments: The swim was awful. I don't know how long it has been since I swam, but I know I was not prepared. I should have gotten into the water lat week to swim some just to get used to breathing, but I didn't and I was bad. Lesson learned What would you do differently?: Train Transition 1
Comments: Had trouble putting on shoes. For some reason I couldn't manage the laces and it took awhile. Bike
Comments: The bike went well. I started out at my own pace and tried to pedal consistently. I am always concerned about being on a mountain bike at a race and getting passd by everyone. Since I was so slow on the swim I was behind a lot of people. Anyway I caught up to a few guys who were going slow on any uphill and faster on the downhill. This caused problems for me as I try to push up and down the hills. So I eventually passed them and moved onto the next group. They were doing the same thing with the hills. At one point I hit a group of 4 that was completely blocking the road. I had to hit the brakes, which was annoying. I quickly stood up and pushed passed them. From there on in it was smooth sailing. Transition 2
Comments: Almost ripped my head off when glasses were looped through helemt straps. Other than that no issue. Run
Comments: This was the only part of the race I wanted to do well at. I was pretty bummed when they said they wouldn't do splits as I would have liked to see what my running pace was. I started off with my legs feeling a little heavy. It has been 18 months since I did a brick so this wasn't surprising. I kept an easier pace to start and tried to catch the person in front of me. It was odd to see people running slow and I was not sure if I was doing something wrong by going faaster than them. At the turn around there is a slight up hill and I took it easy up the hill, then got back onto Ali'i and picked up my pace. It was a gradual increase in speed as I wasn't sure how much I had in the tank. By the end of the race I was going pretty fast and definitely should have kicked a lot sooner. What would you do differently?: I want to be able to race and rather than just run. My training to date has been for building a base so I have a lot to learn physically and mentally to get into racing mode, I am hoping with that knowledge I will figure out how to do a race pace. Post race
Warm down: None What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of swim training. No speed training fo rother exercises and no plan to race. For now I am just interested in base training. Event comments: The race is free so it is hard to say anything bad about it. Everything is very informal and straightforward. You start here, turn around at the signs and look out for cars. I will do more of these races. Last updated: 2008-11-03 12:00 AM
