Pre-race routine:

Southern California is a lifestyle/vibe like no other in the usa. Talk about laid back...I showed up at the creepiest T1 area ever. It was just north of the Venice Beach Pier off the beach. There were virtually no street lights on and nothing in transition. There were only 3 volunteers present for the opening. I was literally the 1st bike in the area. Being a point to point race, they required you to leave a bag (tagged with your #) with all your gear to be shuttled to T2/finish. I was a bit paranoid having to trim down my normal gear list and get out of my standard checklist, etc. After about 20 minutes of setup and chatting with my neighbor, I counted there was still only 20 bikes in the rack. In theory, ALL bikes had to be racked in the next 70 minutes.

I went back to the hotel for a bonus hour of sleep. When we returned the pros were about to get out of the swim. T1 was supposed to be cleared an hour ago. There were hundreds of competitors who were just hanging in the area..the pros must have been ****ed!!

Comments:

I had an early wave so it was time to wetsuit up and take a warm up swim. It was a loop swim. The first leg was about 100 yds in knee deep surf then through a pretty mean surf break and another 200+ yards. I counted 3 wave breaks to dolphin dive under on the warm up...My wave caught a more active swell and we had 4 pretty sizable waves to duck under. The remainder of the swim was a pretty nice. They allowed 10 minutes between wave starts. There was about a 2-3 foot chop ...I didn't feel like Aquaman today but I will take the sub 29 swim

Comments:

T1 was pretty smooth and had to take the extra step of stuffing and securing your bag.

T2..you drop off your run sneakers, etc for T2 at the expo the day before and they place (hopefully) your bag at your rack. I was a bit neurotic about this procedure but it went off without a hitch.

Run...I felt pretty good after a nice ride. I jetted off through the first avenue and made the left tune and saw the hill.....There is a very substantial hill doing up to the Disney Theater...The run is a 2 loop deal so you must ascend this large hill twice...My first mile was 7:20, second with the hill was 8:30....3&4 were back on the flat and I nailed them at 7:00ish...the second hill was rough and I did mile 4 in 8;50...with the hill behind me I put the pedal down and had a great final stretch. I was shocked to pull out a 46:15 run for the 2:31:31 finish...13th in the age...

Event comments:

I am glad I am doing the full Lifetime Fitness Series. I would probably not return to this one or recommend it to other east coasters. It was semi hectic with the loose organization. The volunteers that were there were great but they were definitely not enough to handle the masses...they were running out of water on my second run loop....and there were 15 waves after mine...Also, downtown LA is making a turn for the better but still is pretty seedy with some colorful folks lurking around the streets.

Course: The bike was kind of surreal. The first 5 miles was into a constant slight incline and headwind...3 lanes wide and the road was relatively smooth. It was a main road but though a residential area without any enthusiasm. After you go under the I-10 you head east on Wilshire Blvd...again surreal as the route went through storefronts that were mostly closed and without any sight of spectators. The remainder was full of about 12 medium sized climbs & descents...The final 2 miles is a pretty steep downhill towards T2...I felt good and worked hard on the bike...I was very happy to park with a 1:12:30..fyi, of note, the bike route was the most aromatic ride I have ever experienced. I have a horrible sense of smell but I caught several strong smells of tortillas, Asian food and unfortunately several nasty urine spots.
