Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Walked up to the start area and stretched out. Did not jog to warm up.

Comments:

Mile 1- Just trying to get into a good running pace and get out of the crowd. My speed seemed to go up and down because of all of the runners and looking for the open spot.
Mile 2- Started getting into a good pace and got the breathing controlled from the excitement of the race and running around the first mile like a chicken with my head cut off. Got the core temp up and took off the sweatshirt.
Mile 3- Felt good with my pace and breathing. Started to get a little thirsty because of the cold air.
Mile 4- Had got some water at the station and took a little drink. A couple of runners went down because of the ice that formed around the station. Still feeling good but wondering if I could keep the pace.
Mile 5- Running good and wanting to speed up a little but was second guessing the conditioning so I held back a little.
Mile 6- At this point it was time to kick it in and finish strong. This was one of my fastest miles yet. I was winded but was not going to slow down. At one point the area narrowed and I got cut off several times. This hurt my finish because I had to come out of my stride and it was messing with my head.
Finished strong all of the way across the finish.

My daughter had been riding her bike with me while I ran and because of her and other training advise from Timebaron my speed had really increased. My daughter gave me the advise before the race that if I wanted to go fast I need to picture her on her bike in front of me and try to catch her. This was the best inspiration yet and it worked.
What would you do differently?:

I would eat different the night before and the morning of the race. I did not follow my normal routine. Needed more carb loading the night before the race.

I would start up in the 8 minute corral instead of closer to the 9 minute.
Post race
Warm down:

Went to finish area and got 2 1/2 pints of chocolate milk provided by Trauth Dairy. Walked to the car and got phone and walked the race backwards and met up with the wife and sister in law. Walked jogged 2.24 miles with them to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too far back in the start area.

Morning breakfast was not what I normally eat. The normal is 1 1/2 to 2 bagels with peanut butter. I did not have any at the house and did not want to go back out to get some the night before.

Need to get into a better mental state prior to race. I was second guessing myself at the start line and not staying focused on the high goal.

Event comments:

This is a fun race and has a good course.
