Pre-race routine:

Set off early enough, planned to get down early, short ride in and then was aiming for a top 50 finnish....

HOWEVER....

My brand new SRAM Red, all carbon, Mavic Rsys whells, love of my life FELL OFF THE ROOF OF MY CAR.... and was in bits on the road at third corner from my house...

I shed a tear, picked up the frame etc, put it in the car and took it home.

I had picked up my mate who lives just down the road, and he consoled me, and convinced me to get one of my other bikes and do it any way...i would have just sat at home, stared at the mess and cried anyway he said...

So picked another bike...changed cars and drove down.
Event warmup:

rode from the car park at work to the start line.

Comments:

Didn't bother getting in a start grid etc, we were pretty late and just rode off...well sort of...

Just as we were about to cross the start line the ballon thing collapsed, and 2 guys on a tandem fell off right in front of us... the guy at the back hit the deck pretty hard and split his head open quite badly, i left my bike, grabbed their bike so they could look after each other, parked their bike off the road on the grass, went back, got my bike, then started the "race"...

After all of that, I was in no mood to race, so just dragged my mate around, we chatted a bit, enjoyed the ride, i waited for him after every hill, and he ended up doing a PB and was very pleased with his time, so the day wasn't a complete loss!
What would you do differently?:

mmmm...let me think...not put my bike on the roof of the car!
Post race
Warm down:

Work had got us shirts, paid some of the entry fee and put on a nice marque with muffins, fruit, bacon and egg muffins, p pies etc etc...very nice way to "warm down"

Event comments:

When I got home I examined the bike in more detail, put some bits back together, and realised how lucky I was...some superficial scratches to the car, some scratches on the shifters and that was it...no frame damage at all, but one small plastic bit missing from one shifter...i went back to the scene of the crime, found the missing part on the road and thanked my lucky stars...that could have been MUCH worse!!!!!
