Pre-race routine:

Left the house around 6:30, took the train up to the park. The funny thing about New York on race days is that everyone on the subway at that hour is wearing tights and running shoes and carrying a backpack. It always amuses me for some reason.
Met Kristin (LazyMarathoner) at a Starbucks and had a coffee.
It's been so long since I've used my Garmin that I couldn't remember how to set up the virtual training partner that I always use to pace myself in road races, so it was basically just a very large HRM.
Event warmup:

By the time we got our bags dropped off and stripped down to our running clothes, the race had aready started. We ran across the park and jumped into the corral before the last runner crossed. I had no time at all to stretch, and was thinking throughout the first mile, "If I reinjure myself, I am the stupidest person alive."

Comments:

I started very slowly and, in general, really didn't push at all until the last mile. This is the first race I've done since the NYC Tri in July and the longest outdoor run since the tear in my calf was diagnosed in August. I was hoping to finish with a sub-9:00 effort and I did. I think I could have run a little faster, but I'm not unhappy with the results.
What would you do differently?:

I should have stretched beforehand. That was foolhardy and I won't make that mistake again. I'm sure I could have pushed a faster pace in retrospect, but I wasn't going for a PR--just wanted to get myself back into the racing game again. It's been a while.

Warm down:

Hurried to the baggage area and got dressed, waited around for Kristin (who, it turns out, was waiting around for us.) Headed home on the train.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The injury. Lack of run training over the past 6-8 months.

Event comments:

NYRR races are always good. This was a crowded one, but it was fine. If I had started when I was supposed to, I wouldn't have been behind so many slower people.
