Pre-race routine:

Spent the night in Austin .5 miles from the start with Hammer. Got to bed later than I should but got pretty good sleep for being so "sick" allergies. Woke at 5:45. Slammed 2 Ensure and a cup of coffee. 1 water bottle and 1 small bottle of acceleraid (took to race and drank till mile 8.(great idea for this race) No luck with the toilet. Cold morning 38 at start and never above 40-45.
Event warmup:

Jogged to the start area and lost ACR and Hammer. Found Derek and got to Emb Suites for a last min toilet. Ready to run 10 min prior to race time. When the gun went off there was no movement so I ran back to ES and used the facilities again (good call). Back to the start and folks were slowly moving. Took off the tyvek jacket prior to run. Wore sleeveless base, Longhorn shirt, PI vest, and gloves. Lost the vest around 1.5-2 mile. Goals at start were A 1:45 (8 min) B 1:50 (8:20 min).

Comments:

Started 6 min post gun time and weaved thru the crowd. Caught ACR and Hammer around mile 2.5-3 and they kept up for a while. At some point it ended up being me and ACR all the way to mile 11.5. I had about a 60 sec lead (later start) and he tried to put me away in the last 2 miles. Even with the slope we were running a very fast pace for that phase of the race.(7:28 or faster for the last 5K) I was able to stay close enough, to edge him out by 41 sec. That felt good. Gut check for about a mile but I knew the course better than he did and knew how close I needed to keep him for the win. Nice to be the winner vice the R&R result.
What would you do differently?:

Watch the HR more. I was more concerned with running sub 4 min halfs than what my heart was doing. I looked every mile or so but could have bonked if I had not noticed a 159 at mile 3 and backed off to a 152
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, picture with ACR waited for the others to finish

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. Better outcome than expected by nearly 8 min and better than best estimates by 3 min. I am nearly 180# still and need to drop the weight to 165+/- but that would not have changed this outcome.

Event comments:

Great race. Good food, will run again. Nice to have a PR course set up for us!
