Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am. Ate Marathon snikers bar and Cliff bar. took 5 units of insulin. I feel this breakfast works the best for me. got to parking at 5:45. Parking was easy at this time. If i waited an extra 15 min it would have been Hell. Eddie was going to do the 5K so I met him and did some warm ups. Hung around the 3:40 pace team at the starting line. Coast Gaurd Helicopter flew over bf race. Was pretty cool. Then gun off. I must have missed the mat with chip because it didnt record my start time. My start time on the results was the gun time.
Event warmup:

Jogged around about 8 miniutes and did some good stretching. Legs felt little tight but good,

1st off my timing chip must have not read when crossing the start line because my offical time was 1:46:22, the same as the gun start. There is no way this was even close to being possible especially where I was standing with thousands of people in the race. It sucks because the time difference put me 30 places behind where I should have been (357th). So I went with my Garmin time that I kept.

Fun race to do. I felt great the whole way. I started off wanted to stay with the 8:23 pacer but I lost him during the shuffle and didnt want to waste energy trying to pass people and catch up. I figured I would meet up with him eventually and did at around mile 7. My race plan was to start off going close to the pace I wanted to finish at 1:50 and make adjustments through the race. After the 1st mile I stayed under the 8:23 pace and felt great so I just kept with it. When on Bourbon the street was clustered with trash bags, cars, and soap from cleaning up from last night. I decided to run on the side walk and around spectators here just because people where getting slowed down. It opened up again around Lee circle and under the interstate heading onto St. Charles. The miles flew by in this race and I was surprised at how I was doing. I ran in my Newtons which felt like they were doing me real good.

I wanted to do this race for training for 70.3 NOIM in April. I was reluctant to do it because of my recent broken rib. But it has been feeling a lot better lately so I decided to still give it a try. The 3 Ibuprofens did me good for the race and kept me vertually pain free. I spotted a few people I decided I would follow during the race but I changed people and paces accordingly to how I felt. Passed Mile 6 and thought that it was almost the half way point and decided ill maintain the pace a little while longer to not put in a full kick till it was closer to the end. Around mile 8-9 I relized the race would be over soon and then started to really pick it up and treat it as a 5k. I was able to do sub 8 min miles without much pain and decided that I was going to try and finish this strong. Legs felt a little tight around mile 9-10 but nothing too bad. Once I got to Lee circle and headed back into the CBD I was already happy because I know I was going to beat my goal time of 1:50. So I really pushed it to try and empty the tank.

The last stretch to the super dome when I was really pushing hard There was a strong headwind that kind of slowed me a bit but I was still pushing. My garmin hit the 13.1 mile mark and still not at finish line. I was kind of nervious that I couldnt even see the finish line but all of a sudden a sharp turn came up where the shoot was. I still had enough for a last sprint to the finish line. Finish line read gun time which was 1:46:22 and Garmin read 1:45:30. I was happy to beat my goal time by 4:30.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little more speed work. I felt I had the trainig for thetime and distance but now just have to work on building the speed.

Heart rate was decent during race. I covered up the HR with tape as I didnt want it to limit my pace. Always works better that way.
