Pre-race routine:

Roll outta bed, find some warm clothes, wake up the boy, split a banana with him and grab some water. Cold walk to the T to South Station then wait for the Bustonian, equipped with color changing lights, glass and bottle holders everywhere, pole for dancing and some of the worst clubby dance music blaring. Crammed in there with 5 dozen other racers and made our way to Legal.
Event warmup:

Toes are froze before the finish so I did the group warmup with everyone else outside. Got the blood moving a little, but too cramped to stretch and the moves were very leotard-and-legwarmers-aerobics-class so didn't get too into it.

Paced about for a bit with the delayed start, then confusedly made our way to the ACTUAL start which happened to be on the other side of the mat than originally thought.

Comments:

Listened to my PT and took it really easy with the plan to jog 1/2 to 2/3 of the course. Focused on Chi Running the first two miles keeping a very easy pace. Splits showed I was doing 10 min miles, and I was kind of impressed at how easy-breezy that felt to me. Wish I had my Garmin to see what my HR was doing since it didn't feel like much effort. Recently started on BP meds again and curious about how that will be affecting my training.

After completing mile two, as I promised my PT and my knees, I walked. It felt kinda tedious so I tried race walking. I was thinking about the form of some 6-minute miler Olympic Race Walker I saw on Youtube sometime ago and tried doing a little race walking. PT said- don't run the whole thing - but never said not to race walk the rest of it. Race walked for about 2 minutes before my calves and shins were burning and begging me to jog again! Jogged a few seconds to calm down those muscles and then walked until turning the corner right before the entrance back to the mat.

Turned on the music for the first time (had the headphones in my ears, but nothing going!) and heard one track from my running mix as I bolted to the finish. Waved to Jonah on his way out to the second loop, barely missing a hi-five, then to RedSoxChick who was just grabbing some water on her way out to her second 10k loop and shouted "Looking good!" as I sprinted by. That made me smile big cause I realized that the little, itty bitty sprint I did felt great! I know running the whole thing would not have felt too good, but how my legs held up was really promising.
What would you do differently?:

Remember the Garmin or remember to charge the iPod which had about a song left in it before cashing out.

Wouldn't change anything about the running part - I did as much as was reasonable and still managed to enjoy making it out there. Pretty good time considering how much I walked!
Post race
Warm down:

A little stretching, chugged a Vitamin Water and a Harpoon IPA and made it back to the finish line to take a couple pictures of Jonah and then space out talking to Boston_Beginner as RedSoxChick ran by.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Gotta love those crunchy knees.

Event comments:

Decent performance by the race director who had nearly 10x as many folks as last year, but still a bit rocky.

Race started 15+ minutes late and there weren't enough folks telling runners where to go at the start. Took a while for the big bottleneck of folks on the wrong side of the start to move around to the other side. That other side, unfortunately was packed with snow and a little icy and not the best place to put the start, but they were working with what they had.

Around the hour mark, there was no semblance of order on the last stretch of the course. The bag check and the chowder/beer line was out of control and directly in the path of the last 100 yards. It got worse by the minute and people just started milling about right in the straightaway at the end of the course! I yelled at a few people but then gave up, pretty disheartened that people gave me dirty looks when I asked them to move cause there was still a race going on. Feh.

Oh well, they've got some lessons for next year. Hopefully they'll decide to cap the race at a more manageable field or get many, many more volunteers.

Course: I do like this course - it's flat and pretty and virtually empty. Would be a good spectator route if it weren't so cold out and the snowpiles didn't take up much of the sidewalk.
