Swim
Comments: Could not believe it but my goggles wouldn't seal. As I walked down to the start I couldn't get it. I fumbled with them near the dock and still no seal. So I jumped in and the left side filled with water. Tried to clear and reseal but no luck. So I had to get moving. What a pain in the butt. Could not see with the left eye. I stayed very straight for me. I am not a strong swimmer. Never got very comfortable because of the leak but pressed on. When I got out of the water my eye was pretty messed up from the goggle incident. What would you do differently?: Not have leaky goggles Transition 1
Comments: So happy to be out of the river. My eye was messed from the swim. I could not see and was trying to clear the eye but couldn't Asked a volunteer how it looked and he said fine. Started to change but took a little more time to get my eye clear. Finally went clear enough to see so that I could bike What would you do differently?: Not much Bike
Comments: Wow this was much hillier than I thought it would be. I need to get some more hill work in. Wanted to average 18 but could only muster 16.9. Don't know if my legs were drained from the swim or what. Stayed to my nutrition and peed 3 times out there. The perpeteum worked great. Stayed calm and tried to enjoy the ride. Lagrange was nice but those hills were killer. I wanted to have some left for the run and decided not to push it. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 2
Comments: Changed my shirt, had a Hammer Gel, lubed up, and got out. I think I may have spent a little too much time in there but was not too concerned about that. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Started off great. Averaged a little under 9's for the first 3 miles. I felt great. Might have been the adrenalin from being off the bike but it was nice. Walked all the aid stations and drank water and some gatorade. Stopped the gatorade later on. Saw family at the turn around and that pumped me up to get to the end. Ran the first 15 miles but then started doing a run walk deal to finish it up. Kinda feel bad about it because I had no reason to stop running. No cramps but I was just exhausted and tired of running. I would make deals with myself to run to the next cop car or street sign. I saw towards the end that I was going to have my goal of a sub 14 so I just went with it. Saw my dad at about 25.5 and he ran with me to the start of the chute. He was great with the motivation. As I came down the chute I could not believe it was over. What a cool finishing line with the crowd and music. It was an amazing feeling and one of the best days of my life. Family was right at the end and I waved as I crossed. What would you do differently?: Push myself to keep running. Easy to say now as I sit here with a beer. Post race
Warm down: Got my picture taken and went and ate about half a pizza. Didn't need medical but was hungry. Told some war stories, showered, and went to bed. What limited your ability to perform faster: Would have liked to kick my training up a little more but hell it's my first one and I hit my goal of a sub 14. So I have to say I did pretty well. Event comments: I loved the race but they need to do something about the swim start. That was terrible. They should have assigned waves or start based on your number. That would eliminate the long wait in line. But other than that it was an awesome race with great volunteers. I could not believe the organization and how well everything was run. Got up at 4:30 and had a cliff bar and some water. That is all that I ate. Went down to the transition and started getting the bike ready and whammo saw that I had a flat! The stem was leaking and when I went to take the cap off the stem broke in half. Glad it happened here and not out on the course. Mechanics changed it out and I was good to go.
I thought the walk from the hotel to the transition and then the walk to the swim start line was enough. That seemed to be the longest walk I have eveer done at the start of the race. The line was crazy.
