Swim
Comments: Besides being chilled to the bone, I felt pretty good in the early going. Much more comfortable this time. It took a while to get some elbow room, but after the first buoy, I'd settled into a nice rhythm. Again, however, I got totally off course. I added a good hundred yards to my swim (again)- maybe even worse than the LA Tri. Came out of the water 50 feet down the beach from where I should have, but otherwise felt okay. What would you do differently?: Brought a wetsuit- I was chilled to the bone, and didn't warm up until the tail end of the run. Also, the sighting was abysmal. Really bad this time. I thought I'd just found open water on the outside and really veered off. I now know that I naturally pull to the right when I swim; gotta work on that. Transition 1
Comments: Purposefully took my time here, as it was my first transition. Feet were like icebergs, so shoes took way too long. Also screwed around with various other things that slowed me down. What would you do differently?: Have a better plan. Bust ass more. Have better equipment. Bike
Comments: I was sort of nervous about the first hill, as I hadn't done any real hills on the bike. Also, the bike was spanking new, and it was my third ride on it since purchase/fitting. All things considered, including my woeful cycling fitness, I felt okay with it. A good learning experience. Need to learn to remember to drink occasionally, and to corner better without losing speed. Probably could have gone faster, but was being conservative as a first timer. What would you do differently?: Work a bit harder, have more practice going in. Basically train more. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty leisurely here again. Feet still non-responsive. Again had trouble getting shoes on. Also took probably too much time catching my breath. What would you do differently?: Have more urgency (and warmer feet). Run
Comments: Surprised at how numb my feet still were. Got out to a slowish start, but pushed through. Developed a minor side stitch early on, but was able to keep it in check. Ultimately ran faster than I thought, and was happy that I never walked. I've never done running of any kind, and a meager 5k felt like an accomplishment. I loved seeing my family at the finish line with super cool "team Andrew" tee-shirts. Overall, though, I was shuffling along pretty slowly, and need a lot of work on my running, which is currently my limiter, I think. What would you do differently?: Just need to train more. This is an area I really need to improve fitness. Post race
Warm down: Just found Nicole and the kids and downed some Gatorade. Wandered around for a while and had some banana. Then scooped up the kids and went home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Just need more experience and fitness. Event comments: Nice race for newb's like me. The bike course is a bit treacherous because of the 3 loops and traffic, but the rest was nice enough. Last updated: 2008-12-01 12:00 AM

Arrived pretty late compared to most and scoped out the transition area. Had to work to find a spot for my bike, and set up my stuff. Then wandered around for a bit to find the start and get my bearings. At a banana and sipped Gatorade to follow up my raisin bran and fruit from earlier.
Went down to the water about 15 minutes before my start. It was cold. I was literally one of maybe 10 people without a wetsuit. My toes started to freeze almost immediately. I got in the water briefly and tried to get used to the water. It was cold. Got out, found Nicole and the kids and tried to stay composed.
