Swim
Comments: Crappy navigation. Crappy drafting. Chose to avoid the mess as it was a bit of a slug fest. Expected to go around 1:10-1:12 based on lower swim yardage in the bank compared to last time. Slower than expected due to poor navigation and getting beat up a bit. Transition 1
Comments: Nothing too eventful here. Stopped in the porta potty to take a pee. Bike
Comments: Solid ride, but, the wheels for the day got knocked loose starting around mile 40. My beloved Perpetuem was just not going down. Couldn't do it. Had a gel on the bike as emergency fuel and was very glad to have it. Energy was there but the perp was tasting like shat and not sitting well. Tried Gatorade but that was horrible too. Kept trying to force some perp and Gatorade to make sure I didn't come up short on calories. In retrospect, I should have declared a calorie moratorium for 45 minutes and drank lots of clear water. I had upped salt intake a bit to deal with the heat but in my own stupidity didn't up the water intake. Huge. Beginner. Error. Fcuk. Live and learn right? Well, that's an expensive lesson that I knew but just didn't apply. Legs felt good. Climbs were easy. Rode within my the abilities of my legs but beyond my hydration levels. What would you do differently?: Drink more water. Transition 2
Comments: Spent some low quality time in the porta potty here. Had desparately hoped that I'd be able to remedy my situation with a little time in the green office. Let's just say the meeting didn't come together. In the end I know it wasn't the answer anyway. Run
Comments: Made up for the lack of fluids on the ride during the first 15 miles of the marathon. It was not a run but it was a marathon... Two cups of water, cup of coke, every aid station from mile 3 to mile 15. The plan of 10 oz of Hammer gel over the course of the run went out the window. Tried one hit of it at mile two and knew that wasn't happening. Ended up finding that potato chips and oranges tasted good with the coke and water. At mile 15 I took my first pee since T1 and felt the road block in my tummy release its hold. Able to start running most of the distance between aid stations from there to the end. What would you do differently?: Drink more on the bike. Post race
Warm down: What? What limited your ability to perform faster: Um, lack of water on the bike. Event comments: Had a blast with all the Donks out there. Raised over $2,500 for Racers Against Childhood Cancer. Finished about where I expected, but it sure didn't go down the way I thought it would. Legs felt awesome on the bike after a decent swim, but I knew the run would be trouble due to the tummy issues. In hindsight I could have changed things on the second half of the bike to make the run go better. An expensive lesson I hope to not repeat. No desire to sign up for next year whatsoever! Looking forward to doing some shorter tris and a lot more biking of all sorts next year! Last updated: 2008-12-02 12:00 AM
