Pre-race routine:

Woke up and made the long trek across the Causeway. Ate a Kashi bar an hour before start and took 1 Endurolyte at race start.
Event warmup:

Not much. A little light stretching and the usual waiting in line at the Port-O-Lets.

Comments:

The miles went by really quickly at this race. It was a great course - very interesting in terms of sight seeing.
What would you do differently?:

Train better and not get the flu 2 weeks before race day! Longest run was 10 miles and would have liked to have done at least one more 10 miler if not an 11 miler. Also when tapering I should have done 7 miles on the weekend but only did 5 because of the cold. Around mile 9 my quads started to get pretty tired so I could tell Ihad not trained as fully as I should have.
Post race
Warm down:

Got medals, took pictures, and ATE KING CAKE!!!! Yeah, baby. The best part about running long distances is the ability to eat a whole lotta stuff that you wouldn't ordinarily be able to. Stretched a bit and talked to Bear (John), Mrs. Bear (Angel), and Baby Bear (Dylan). Scarfed down some red beans and Subway sandwiches and called it a day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Having had a cold 2 weeks prior and not speed training.

Event comments:

The course and volunteers were great. They had a Coast Guard helicopter fly over at the start and that was pretty cool. Along the way we saw a guy named Larry, part of the 50 state club. He had done 105 marathons LAST YEAR! Amazing as he was an older guy - late 50s maybe early 60s. He chatted with us for a while then left us in the dust - hahaha. He reminded me of Ironman legend Frank Farrar (except Larry actually made conversation; Frank's the silent type). It was so much fun to run the race with Rob. We chatted a lot and joked quite a bit. It went by so fast. They had aid stations every 2 miles and that seemed to be good enough for a race like this. This was my first race since Disney about 2 years ago and it was fun to get back in to a race environment. The people (organizers, volunteers, and racers) are great - a lot of real characters. Several of the back of the pack racers dressed up and that is always fun.

Course: FUN! Started at the Superdome and went in to the French Quarter which was a real hoot. 7 a.m. and people were handing out beer already. Then down St. Charles Avenue in to Audubon Park and back down St. Charles and Poydras Street to the Supderdome. A really pretty and scenic course.
