Event warmup:

Jogged around parking lot a few laps, then just waited around
Swim
  • 37m 23s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

I really haven't swam enough and it showed here. I just couldn't get comfortable and even with lack of training i should have been around the 34-35 minute range.
forgot to take in gel just before swim. I think my calorie depletion started here
What would you do differently?:

swim more, lack of swimming really showed
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

nothing, i actually took my time on purpose. just wanted to make sure i had everything before heading out. Normally I try to fly through these.
What would you do differently?:

looking back should have gone faster, all seconds count
Bike
  • 2h 31m 33s
  • 56 miles
  • 22.17 mile/hr
Comments:

My legs felt tight for about first 5-10 minutes and then loosened up. I couldn't figure out the wind, but from the flags looked like cross wind going out but angled towards me. Legs felt really good so kept pace up, every 10 miles I noticed I was really getting under my goal time. Nothing exciting on the ride, I just felt really good. At mile 40 I decided to ease up the pace a little on purpose. A guy passed me then slightly slowed down. I road about 15 meters back from him over the next 10 miles and then I noticed he began to get tired. My legs felt great so I really picked up the pace until we made the turn from the seawall to the road that takes you towards moody gardens. Here the road is rough and had a headwind so just spun it out till hit transition
What would you do differently?:

I should have kept up my pace throughout the race, stuck with my bigger gear as my legs felt good.
took in 693 cals of infinit.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Some bozo in front of stopped in the middle of the lane down my row and laid his bike on the ground. I physically had to stop, yell at the guy to pick his crap up so I could go around. Took my time making sure had everything and put socks on for the run
What would you do differently?:

could have gone a little faster... again. Also, should have taken a gel
Run
  • 1h 53m 7s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

This has been the area I always struggle at with this distance. My goal was to never stop, even during aid stations. My legs actually felt good coming of the bike. The first 2 miles I fought of my normal cramps that i get. I just pushed through the pain and eventually went away. I hit mile 1 at 7:13 and mile 2 at 14:46, mile 3 22:34. At that point I decided to slow just a little to preserve some energy. My mistake was not taking in any calories until mile 6. Looking back I should have started the run with a gel and taken in more calories after each loop. Lap 1, 2, 3 were uneventful, never stopped no cramping issues since those first few miles and I was excited that I hadnt stopped yet. Mentally I calculated around a 1:42 finish, a little slower than I wanted but this would put me under 5 hrs. As I started my 4th lap all of a sudden my legs felt like two bricks, I slowed to a snails pace. At mile 11 aid station I stopped for the first time, drank some coke but by then it was too late. Next two miles were run and walk. Oh well, huge improvement from my previous 70.3 races. Good thing about it is that i realized I can run through a cramp and deal with the pain, just need to watch my calorie intake and just keep running.
What would you do differently?:

Watch my calories and take them in, even if my mind is telling me not too. Keep running through the pain. Being able to do this is what will get you to your goal time.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with todde (jwithyco), yes he smoked the course in 4:22 and ate some food, had a few beers and watched alot of people come across the finish. We waited for Rodney as well, it was his first HIM, he finished the course... nice job Rodney!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not too much, swim was a little expected. Bike went well for early season race and run at this distance is nearly figured out. PR by 19 minutes over any other HIM for me, so happy with that

Event comments:

Great venue for a race, too bad IKE hit last year and they had to modify the bike and run. But nice job by Keith getting it done. Definately a great stop for early season race, especially now that I live about 23 miles from there since I just moved last year from Austin to houston, clear lake area! Would definately do this one again.
