Overall Rank = 499W/551W
Age Group = F30-34
Age Group Rank = 114/121
Pre-race routine:

4am wake up, quiet sitting few minutes breathing aka meditation, eat yogurt + nature valley granola, hydrate, grab bag into car, load bike stop to get gas
in transition ate a small apple, half banana, half homemade cookie bar, water
Event warmup:

virtually none, some flexing warm, some swim about, otherwise just working on relaxing
Swim
  • 36m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

sighting into the sun still sucks, followed the mob though and did alright, a nice swim, relaxed
What would you do differently?:

swim harder I s'pose
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

funny fog-film over my eyes when I exited water, kept blinking to make it go away, could have just been from looking into the sun over and over + orange goggle lenses, was weird though
What would you do differently?:

move faster
Bike
  • 1h 50m 43s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 14.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Olde Stage kicked my butt, not necessarily physically but mentally...I had a panic attack and had to stop & recover, then later dry heaving, ended up walking the last 1/3 mile or so (I was NOT alone in this though)
can I just say that eventually all the 'on your lefts' got a little old, 'cause really where else was anyone going to pass me? [sic]
I got really used to it and eventually resigned myself to my training pace...sigh.
I'll go out there one of these days soon enough to try it on again though, maybe I'll perform without the pressure of so many people doing better than me.
ate half a clif builder bar, alternated clif cherry blox with margarita blocks, pounded water
What would you do differently?:

more practice climbing hills
Transition 2
  • 03m 52s
Comments:

not much to report here, little tough time getting shoe on, then forgot to tighten lace, then realized forgot race number & went back to get it (dumb)
What would you do differently?:

move faster
Run
  • 1h 18m 8s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

wore the floppy camp hat, looks silly but I need the shade
alternated clif cherry & margarita blocks every 20' or so
first 2 miles got into rythm, then panic attack felt like a fish gasping for air...battled brutal inner demons walking mile 2 to 3, entailing crying & throat constrictive breathing...then a weight lifted, I looked up instead of at the ground, started a good pace at mile 3, picked up a buddy shortly after and we finished in strong style.
What would you do differently?:

not walk at all, I'm hoping this is the last I'll see of the throat constriction panicky attacks, I'm really tired of it.
run was below average according to training, I'm marking it average though 'cause it's an improvement over my last races.
Post race
Warm down:

walking around, cold towel on head LOVELY, stretching in the grass with other athletes, breathing
where was the massage tent?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nerves. I know if I can beat this nervous panicky thing & relax, have FUN, then I will be able to push myself harder get some better pace.

Event comments:

Don't know how the race will look next year since M-Dot has taken over, I guess we'll all have to see about it.
A good race, SO much better than the sprint. And (although I'll have to look this up) I beat my previous Olympic time by 40 minutes.
