Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 415/430. Stretched/foam rolled. Coffee & peanut butter sandwitch. Stretched/foam rolled. Get dressed in race clothes. Stretched/foam rolled. Out the door to the race by 5:15, race site around 5:30. Dropped off T2 stuff & picked up chip. Biked to T1, scary in the dark.
Set up T1, got body marked, talked w/ some people, bathroom, stretched.
Event warmup:

None. Besides all the stretching.

Comments:

Very rough swim for me. Lined up with the people I wanted to be swimming with but just got beat up in the start. Missed the lead pack and had people swimming at me and hitting me from both sides. Really struggled to get my breathing under control in the first 200m and had to calm myself down a good bit. Finally pulled away from the craziness but not close enough to catch the lead pack without really surging to get there. Have a horrible time sighting because my goggles were foggy from the start. Just tried to keep the lead pack in sight, they were easier for me to see than the buoys. Sun in our eyes on the way back and for awhile I thought I was swimming off course. Rounded the drain and headed for the beach, glad the swim was almost done. Pushed the swim, just wanted to be able to draft this race and missed it by about 2-3 body lengths.
What would you do differently?:

Line myself up better and stay as far to the outside as possible. Don't miss the draft.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Struggled w/ this transition. Tried to put my sunglasses on before I took my cap off, then realized that they were all foggy anyways and I wouldn't be able to wear them. Had a lot of trouble clipping in at the top of the hill.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions and learn how to do a flying mount.

Comments:

I went after the bike portion and I don't think I could have pushed much harder. There were some spots that I let up a little bit to give my legs a little reprieve before pushing again. Struggled w/ the Lawyers Rd. portion. Had some trouble w/ downhills on second loop because the course was crowded by that point. So great to see so many familiar faces out on the course! Felt like I was going to puke towards the end bike and wasn't sure how you are supposed to do that without stopping. Luckily I was able to keep all the fluids down. Came into T2 as the second female (due to starting in the first swim wave), it was an odd feeling but I knew I was going to have my work cut out for me on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep biking and bike more hills and not just the trail. This is my best bike split/ performance to date. Really happy with this overall.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Ok but not great. Struggled a little bit with getting the order of things correct.

What would you do differently?:

Learn how to do a flying dismount.
Run

Comments:

Painful. Knew this was going to be a struggle physically and mentally. But knowing that going in, I think, actually made it better than unexpected pain. Slowed my pace and tried to get in control of my breathing during the first two miles. My HR was really high coming off the bike and I didn't want to have an asthma attack. There was pain in my right knee and left quad but I tried to ignore it the best I could. Was passed by one female on the way out and two on the way back. Felt a little better after the turn around and just kept telling myself I could take some time off of running after the race/ season was over. I have to thank QueenK for her saying of "don't be afraid to make it hurt a little more." I think I repeated this to myself at least 100 times while I was out running, its what kept me moving forward and why I didn't stop to walk. Was so excited to see the stadium and hear all the people. I honestly couldn't have pushed this run any harder than I did.
What would you do differently?:

Get my IT Bands and back into a somewhat healthy working order. Train to run and build up slowly.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched and talked to lots of different people. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The run. I know what I need to do, now I just need to do it.

Had a great time at this race! It was a tough day out there but its so much fun racing with friends and also having them out there on the course to support you and you them. We live in a community of triathletes and its nice to have this race in our backyard.
