Swim
Comments: Good pacing on the swim, swam my pace, kept it steady. What would you do differently?: N/A Transition 1
Comments: Ran barefoot through fitness club, across parking lot, and into transition. No wetsuit so this was a simple T1. Shoes were already attached and supported w/ rubber band. One velcro strap came out of the socket so I had to fix once on the bike. No socks. What would you do differently?: N/A Bike
Comments: More climbing than I've done on a single ride all year! Beautiful course up Mt. Diablo. I'd definitely come back to do this ride again. Drank 1 (small) bottle with Clif Drink Apple w/ caffeine. Legs felt great despite the burn and cardio capacity was there. What would you do differently?: N/A Transition 2
Comments: Hands were chilled through, so getting the shoes on and off wasn't terribly fast. Couldn't unstrap before dismount because it was straight uphill! Race organizers were great, they handed my T2 bag to me as soon as I racked my bike. Well executed transition. No running socks. What would you do differently?: N/A Run
Comments: Got above the fog and exclaimed, "Holy &%#$ this is beautiful!". Actually turned around and ran backward uphill for a few strides to take in the view. Ran with a water bottle (aid station at T2) and drank 90% by finish. Legs felt like bricks, especially my calves - I was afraid they would cramp for the entire run. Definitely had the cardio engine, although I was huffing at at the start of the run. Wish my legs had more 'umpfh' so I could have pushed a bit harder. What would you do differently?: N/A Post race
Warm down: Walked around Mt. Diablo summit, had a Hammer gel, a few mini bagels with peanut butter, apple juice and h2o. Checked-out the visitors center and the views. Talked to a few of the other athletes while waiting for the shuttle. Shuttle down the mountain takes forever! (but I was glad the driver was taking it easy, as those roads are hairy) What limited your ability to perform faster: More hill training, especially for the run! Event comments: Race was organized very well, despite the logistical difficulties of a point-to-point triathlon. I would definitely do this race again. Great early-season race to build climbing fitness. Last updated: 2008-12-17 12:00 AM
