Swim
Comments: Got too out of breath a couple of times and had to swim w/ head up for a few strokes. Got passed by a lot of people here. I was happy that it didn't freak me out to swim in a crowd, though. I feel much more confident going forward to open water situations. What would you do differently?: Take off my damn shorts in the transition area! Transition 1
Comments: fumbled bike shoes a little, but basically happy with this transition, time is included in bike time, I think. 84/303 What would you do differently?: learn to mount bike w/ shoes already attached Bike
Comments: I knocked the chain off the rings. When I put it back on, it didn't stay the first time, so had to try again. I got passed by several people and had a hard time passing late in the race because of the turns. Wore sunglasses, so rain stayed out of eyes, but couldn't see well. What would you do differently?: shift more carefully, learn what makes the chain fall off and also get a tune-up Transition 2
Comments: I dropped my helmet while I was running to the bike rack, and forgot to take off my shorts. I got my swim cap and goggles on while running to the pool. Time is included in swim time, I think. What would you do differently?: been more careful with my helmet, and removed my shorts Run
Comments: I started a little too fast, but settled into an appropriate pace pretty quickly; managed the best pace that I could for this distance What would you do differently?: finish warm-up closer to start, if possible, so that fast starting pace is less shocking Post race
Warm down: walked a little and hit the showers What limited your ability to perform faster: dropping my chain and swimming in my shorts Event comments: This event was extremely well organized and perfectly suited for athletes new to the sport. I can't imagine a better way to get started. Last updated: 2008-12-17 12:00 AM

Packed the car the night before. Got up at 5:20 and had a breakfast of an orange, a glass of water, and a Luna bar. Checked the weather forecast one last time for equipment decisions. Got bike checked by Haymarket bike guy. Set up transition area early, dropped dry bag and towel in bleachers, and used the rest room.
Walked 5' more minutes after set-up. Slow jog for 8', walked, did 2X accelerations, and went to pre-race meeting to stretch while waiting for meeting to start.
