Swim
Comments: Swimming will never be my strong suit, but I actually took about 10 minutes off my time from last year. Pretty freaking phenomenal. As I rounded the turns for the trip back, I knew that going under 40 was possible and COULD NOT believe it. The major difference this year is that I got in and swam right away, made possible by getting acclimated to the water first. I was in the first swim wave since I raced in the Athena category, so I did get swum over a lot. It didn't really create a problem though. This is a little frustrating to me because even though I did so well, I still ranked poorly. I just can't imagine the type of commitment I'd have to make to improve here. Something to think about in the off season. Transition 1
Comments: Struggled with my wet suit a bit, but overall I am happy with this. It's not a small transition area. Stayed focused. 2/3 in AG Bike
Comments: 1/3 in AG! This is my course and I set out to kick butt. I've ridden this course several times so I know when I can take a gel, when to really push the speed, when to shift. The wicked hill up Homestead was AWESOME. Lined with spectators I felt like Queen of the Mountain. They made a change this year so we were directed onto a path instead of making the fast turn from 24 to 19, so I lost a ton of speed there :( My dream bike goal was 1:20 and I think I might have made it without the slowdown, but everyone had to do it. Transition 2
Comments: This seemed to go fast. I'd like to work more on running sockless since that would have helped take off prob 20 seconds. 3/3 in AG but close. Run
Comments: Well, another crappy tri run and where I lost 2nd place in the AG. I should have been able to do this in 1 hour at most but I let myself walk too much. It was bright and sunny and I just felt spent. Actually, I felt differently bad than previous races. No stomach upset this time, but just really, really tired. Maybe because I didn't have enough to eat this morning? I tried to keep the walking breaks short, but it wasn't enough. As I said to the guy struggling in front me: "How can this run possibly be uphill both ways?" 2/3 in AG Post race
Warm down: Funny story. After getting some food I grabbed fresh clothes and a few things to clean up and got in the lake. I went it right by the finish line so I could watch and listen. As I'm standing in the lake, in just my sports bra and tri shorts (having left the disgusting tri top on my car) I realize they are giving the awards for the Oly, starting with the Clydes. Assuming Athena is next I quickly wonder: Do I go up there, half dressed? I eventually decided to get out of the water because I knew by then I was 3rd and I wanted to congratulate the other girls. I meant to stay out of the picture, but the Minnefota Moments guy was suddenly there. I held up my "award" (Final Stretch backpack) in front of me, but I doubt it was enough to look normal since I was totally wet, hair uncombed, etc. I feel bad for the other girls since I ruined their pic. What limited your ability to perform faster: My possibly psychological problem that causes me to melt in the sun? My weight probably. Now for anyone reading this that dosn't know me, I will share that I am only about 7-12 lbs over the Athena weight minimum, so it's not like I am HUGE! But lighter is always faster... Event comments: I need to not look at other peoples times in these races. I leave the race feeling like I've done a good job, made a ton of progress, etc. Then I see the standings and feel like an ass. I can decide to either just not care or only enter races full of newbies. At least this year I have a couple "easy" races thrown in to help my ego. Last updated: 2008-12-19 12:00 AM
