Run
Comments: We take off, and I'm running a sub 6 pace. Ooops! Slow it down a little. My tights weren't sticking to my legs well since I hadn't broken a sweat yet. So I kept on having to pull them up. Eventually one fell below the knee so I just ran like that. I kept thinking these people are running way too fast! Maybe they know what they're doing. I just tried to keep the HR in high zone 3 to zone 4. Plan was to stay as close to but below threshold all day. I enjoyed running on the trails. I heard lots of complaints, but I enjoyed the variety. Cruised into T1. What would you do differently?: Nothing. This is a personal best for a 5k, and it came in a duathlon! And this is incredible considering the amount of running I've put in over the past couple months, which includes a couple weeks off. Transition 1
Comments: Eh, whatever. I wasn't prepared for this. I did take the time to pull my tights back up. My time actually wasn't too bad, but it could've been much better. What would you do differently?: Practice transitions. Bike
Comments: Vroom, Vroom! I've been riding my bike, and I think it's apparent that alot of people haven't. I'm passing people left and right. Really enjoying myself. Keep thinking these people need to experience East Texas. The terrain here in this area will really make you a stronger cyclist. Do good in keeping the HR below threshold. Eventually I find a kid who is very small and can get up the hills well. So he's passing me up the hills, and I'm passing him on the flats and downhills. But eventually he can't keep up. I think I wore him out, because he died on the last 5k. The second loop was a little slower than the first, but not by much. What would you do differently?: Nothing. This went really well. My bike split was just 1 mph behind Ben Hall, who won SMW overall triathlete of the year! Well, maybe some race wheels! Everybody up there had nice wheels... Transition 2
Comments: Not much different than T1. Decent time, but could've been better with practice. What would you do differently?: Practice. Run
Comments: Take off, and I'm joined by some guy from Austin. But he takes off and I can't keep up. I'm really sucking wind at this point. I see the guy at the turn-around, and I thank him for being there. I'm really tired. But the legs are still turning pretty well. Nobody is around me, so it was a pretty uneventful run. What would you do differently?: Just spend more time than my 10-15 miles per week of base running. Post race
Warm down: Found some bagels and bananas. Talked to Maurice and Kelly. Found out Duke and Kami made it and were actually running on the track. Jogged a lap with Duke as a cooldown. What limited your ability to perform faster: Limited running speedwork. Event comments: Very pleased with this effort. And surprised. I think the run course was short though. Almost didn't make it to the race! Duke and I were on our way to the race when we find out Kami had a flat. So we head back, do everything I can to get the tire off, but her lug nuts aren't budging. Duke gives me the keys to his truck, and I take Charity to the race. Unfortunately, Duke and Kami didn't make it to the race in time.
Chatted with Maurice and Kelly. Good to see some old familiar faces.
Jogged a bit. It was too cold, and I forgot gloves.
