Pre-race routine:

Up at 6, leave at 7, arrive 8:20 for nice parking spot

Ate Natural Valley granola bar about 90' ahead and a little fruit, gel 8-10' before start
Event warmup:

Stretched a little. I would have warmed up running but was going moderate first 2 miles on crowded course figured that would be my warm up.

I felt funny about this race this week as I have been doing lots of running but feel strong and durable yet slow. I had been thinking I'd be slow and felt unexcited to race to confirm that fact. In my head I wanted to run sub 62 so under 10m/m but figured I'd be well over that time. A few good BT buddies helped remind me of what was important not my time or pace, but enjoying the journey and that yes I can do this fun cool event when few years ago this was impossible.

Race Plan: (using this to set HR zones)

10K race; break into two segments, go out at moderate pace for 2 miles, then final 4 is a split on my watch. Go harder and harder to get sustain HR and final mile is max.

Comments:

I started with many BTers: Marianne, Josh, Max, Lisa, Mina, Brian, and saw lots of folks I knew. Everyone takes off and I get farther and farther back. I caught up with Scott just before mile 1, chatted a little and was off. Pleased with pace for mile 1

mile 1: 10:31-very crowded

Mile two was uneventful and crowd had strung out a bit more so it was less congested

mile 2: 10:15

I did think that maybe I might be able to get sub 62' depending on my pace going forward

Now time to pick up pace, I knew this was going to be hard and hurt a bit. It was interesting as I just starting passing everyone near me. I had to dodge around folks and run on side walk as most folks were going 10+ m/m. I tried hard to not go full out as I was trying to negative split and keep getting faster until the last mile.

mile 3: 9:48 cool..I was faster...and felt pretty good

Constantly trying to find a path to run that was clear of folks. I picked it up a bit and felt strong and like my IM training was helping me. I started catching the BTers I started with..first Max, then Marianne and Josh, then I saw Mina, but I missed Lisa.

mile 4: 9:20 I was thrilled and felt tears of joy coming on as I knew sub 10m/m was possible if I kept it up. I felt really great and surprised how well I felt.

mile 5: 9:18 Super excited now I figured sub 62 was going to happen..wow me!

I passed lots of folks between 2-5 and no one passed me I recalled

Last 1.2 miles and we have are first hills and two of them. Get to the last stop light that police were stopping traffic only a 1/2 mile to go. I start my asthma type wheezing and knew I had pushed to the limit of what I could do. Now to hang on. There are fewer folks on the course, but I see a few I can pick off. First time someone passed me since mile 2, they were running fast and hoped I could catch them. Wondered where the finish line was and hoping it was soon. There it was and I was done...checked my watch and was super happy that I was sub 62'...yah me!!!

mile 6-6.2: 12:18 two hills
VDot 31, best it has been is 34 last March

I felt really strong and was surprised how fast I run. I had to dodge in and out, on the sidewalks, and back on the road to get passed the folks. I've never passed so many folks ever in a running race.

Really stunned myself as I raced my plan, came in under 62' and would have placed 3rd if they used chip time..two women were ahead of me but ran slower than me but started up front more. I started in the right spot 10m/m area and obviously they didn't.

Most of my runs have been in the 11:20-11:40 m/m pace and I've done no speed work. I know I'll get faster but with IM Canada 6 months out now is not the time to focus on that.

HRM didn't work so great...read really high.

What would you do differently?:

I'm very pleased with how the race went given where I am with my training. I've never passed so many people over the course of 3 miles.

Official results have me listed as 5th but my chip time was faster than the two women who came in 3rd and 4th...so shouldn't I really be 3rd? I don't do this for fame, money but for the challenge. I've never gotten hardware in a running race and it would have been nice. I seeded myself properly at the front of the 10m/m pace group. I guess the other two who started in front of me but ran slower didn't seed themselves in proper place.

Look I negative split from mile 1-5...didn't keep it up for mile 6 but the hills and asthma and maybe a little off pacing wise..but for me excellent!
Post race
Warm down:

Found Kevin, watched BT friends finish then went to Lisa & John's room to chat, have some recovery food and take a shower. Then went out to see Brian and Marianne finish and went out for a great lunch with BTers...fun times!

Any event with BT folks is always better than without.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It's February and my A race is in April.

In general running I'm getting more durable but not fast.

Event comments:

As always racing with BT friends is fun! Great group of folks to race with and celebrate with after wards.
