Pre-race routine:

Day before went to pick up packet and rack bike. I seem to forget the chaos that is involved in larger races. Had to wait about 1/2 hour to get bike checked and racked.

Got up around 4:30 and grabbed some breakfast and headed to race site. Traffic was terrible getting into the park.
Event warmup:

Walking back and forth to the car to drop off my bag and having to get my bento bag. Took my time since they moved the start time due to the traffic. Went to the secret bathroom that most don't use.
Swim
  • 23m 20s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started off in the front but took a bit to feel comfortable. I felt like I was sinking finally got in the groove but kept running into this one girl. I get to the first turn around and the kayaker was way out front of the bouy making several of us completely stop and go around, this just through me off. Got back into the swing of things kept swallowing the nasty water. Pushed the last bit to pass some of the previous wave.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do more drills in order to get faster. I can maintain a reasonable pace will limited swimming will like to see what I can do with more time in the pool.
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

Took it a bit easy didn't want to get my heartrate high before the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe run a bit more. I took 1 minute off from last year so I'm happy
Bike
  • 1h 03m 35s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 16.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall I am extremely happy with this. I pushed myself hard on the bike. Hills are my weakness but I pushed the downhills. This course was a crowded and a couple time scary with some people not knowing to move to the left when they are not passing. I think I might have been able to do a bit better if the course wasn't so packed. This course is tough for a beginner race and normally hate riding this but when it comes race day I love it.
What would you do differently?:

Get better on hills. More time in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

We had rain the past couple days before the race and the hill going down into tranistion was muddy. They were able to put down a mat but I took it a bit easier. Had some trouble getting my socks on. Can't believe I was 1 minute slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Get faster
Run
  • 35m 31s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 10m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs were a bit trashed from pushing the bike. Decided to take it nice and easy for the first mile. Kept just plugging away. I was feeling pretty good until I got to the first real climb before Gatorade Hill, after that my legs were done. I wanted to leave everything out there on this course but just ended taking it easier. I'm ok with the run wish I pushed myself the extra bit, was 1 minute slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

I know how to push it on the bike but somehow I have to figure out how to leave everything out there on the course.
Post race
Warm down:

The finish line was packed, this is one thing I hate. I know families want to cheer and greet the finishers they should allow space for the finishers to move. There was water some where but I couldn't find it because how packed it was. Went up the hill to get some food and waited in line for a finishers postcard. After about 20 minutes I gave up and packed up my stuff and left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall I am happy with my times as long as the swim is long. I need to spend more time on the bike but really need to focus on running this winter. Not mentallly pushing the run.

Event comments:

This year the race just seemed off. The packet pickup and the wait for racking the bike was a bit of a pain. Race morning the parking volunteers did not seem to know what they were doing. This is a great race, especiallly for first timers. I like this race since it was my first tri but, it is just so packed out on the course. I may do this again just not for a couple of years.

I was 2 minutes slower than last year and really think the swim was longer. I was faster in T1 and the bike overall 3 minutes faster and T2 and the run was 2 mintues slower. I think I would have been either the same or a bit faster if the swim wasn't long. Overall I'm happy with what I did.

Course: I really believe this is a long course. Hearing from others that everyone's time is about 2 - 3 min.s slower than last year. While I haven't been swimming much the past couple weeks I am able to maintain a 1:50 pace.
