Pre-race routine:

Protien shake, PB on slice of wheat
Swim
  • 48m 8s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim wave started at 7:15a and directly into the sun. Made it very difficult to see the bouys. Seemed like forever before I reached the first turn. Kept using the south side running path as a guide until I got close to the first bouy.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more because I am really weak here... Wasted alot of energy sight seeing.
Transition 1
  • 03m 2s
What would you do differently?:

Took way too much time through both transitions. Should have hit the gels and hydration while on the bike instead of in the TA.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 29s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.75 mile/hr
Comments:

I really enjoyed the bike course. I always seemed to be going toe-to-toe with someone, whether it was around a turn, uphill, or straights. Very fun bike course overall - best one so far. Only downside was that there were too many turns.
What would you do differently?:

I gave it all I had on the bike since I knew my swim really blew... I was happy with this...
Transition 2
  • 03m 21s
What would you do differently?:

Once again, way too much time here...
Run
  • 56m 23s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

This was by far the worst run I have EVER had! At mile 3, I got very concerned about my hydration. Started feeling bad and skin was very dry and hot. So I took it down a couple of notces and started walking through each water station they had -- one cup drink, one cup over the head (first in career to walk ANY race). My splits tell the whole story...

What would you do differently?:

Start training during the heat of the day for better conditioning -- but don't know if I am doing that.

Event comments:

I went from thinking on the bike "this is the best tri ever - what a cool race", to thinking during the run "what were these m-f'ers thinking starting this race so late in the day for the oly group, this is the worst tri ever!"
Overall, I am glad I did the race. My first tri in AZ and it set a benchmark for me to get better from (definitely won't forget it!). Swim was to be expected, bike was great, and the run was disastrous. If I do this next year, I will be waiting until 3 days before and watching the weather forecast.
