Swim
Comments: First ever pool race, so it was a little weird. I passed four people and got kicked by only one of them. I usually had some good open space. Very cold when I had to go outside to T1 What would you do differently?: I felt good throughout this, even when I got kicked, so I think I would probably do the same. Transition 1
Comments: Since this was an individual wave start, I didn't feel too rushed trying to get on the bike. Felt pretty organized. A little slow because of trying to put on jacket and I couldn't run too fast on the pavement with cold bare feet. What would you do differently?: Make the weather warmer! Bike
Comments: I thought there was some headwind at certain points, although none that I could see - just felt it. Tougher than I thought it would be. It was definitely flat - nice to see an accurate description for once! - but I still struggled. Felt strong for most of it but seemed to struggle in the wind. I tried to pull back some because I wanted to save a little for the run. Distance was shorter than 13, according to my garmin - more like 11. Major props to the guy pedaling with one leg when his pedal fell off and the other guy walking his bike when his crank fell off! What would you do differently?: I definitely need to ride more. Transition 2
Comments: I dismounted too early - the actual line was around a curve. Otherwise okay. Run
Comments: My toes were numb after I got off the bike but did okay during the first mile. Never had to stop to walk. Got a little off because the water stop wasn't really visible - I had to ask if the water was for runners. Again, I think this was shorter than the actual distance - garmin showed 2.96 What would you do differently?: Felt pretty good - probably could have punched it a little more at the end, since I felt good at the end. Post race
Warm down: Walked around to find mom & dad, then talked to some friends, then some slight stretching and then ate chicken pot pie, which I have decided is the ultimate post-cold-weather-race food. What limited your ability to perform faster: As usual, the bike. I also need to practice transitions. Event comments: This is a great race! Set Up Events did a great job organizing, and it is really nice of the Marines to let us do it in that location, which is really cool. My dad was at Parris Island in the 1950s and we got to ride around the base afterwards, so he really enjoyed it too. Now if I can just convince him to do a triathlon ... ate some yogurt and half a bagel around 7:15, then headed over to race site. Set up transition outside and quickly went into pool area to get warm!
A little light jogging, then swam a couple lengths before waiting for start (which was delayed)
