Swim
Comments: I learned from last year not to put too much into the swim. I was over four minutes slower than last year, but I exited the water feeling strong and was able to run into T1. Swim felt very comfortable even after a dreadful first leg due to poor sighting. More based on rank rather than time, but I think the swim was long. I would have thought with a four minute addition in time that my rank would have declined rather than improved. What would you do differently?: Try to sight better. Transition 1
Comments: Dropped goggles in sand running into T1 - this probably added onto the swim time though. Watched a youtube video a few days before the race on getting out of a DeSoto T1 wetsuit quickly. Seemed to help a lot as I had the wetsuit around my waist by the time I made it to the bikes. Couldn't find my bike for about 15-20 seconds. Overall very happy as it was about 1 minute faster than my T1 in the sprint in June. Still room for a lot of improvement though. What would you do differently?: Not drop goggles, find bike faster. Bike
Comments: Very happy with bike. 5+ minutes faster than last year. Still not comfortable at high speeds going downhill, especially in aero. Wished I had pushed Olde Stage a little harder. What would you do differently?: Train on hills more Transition 2
Comments: First tri with race belt, liked it a lot. Bought speed laces but chickened out at the last minute after the sales person said it might change stability of the shoe...never try anything new on race day (race belt excluded). What would you do differently?: Wore socks for the run. Put both socks on, then one shoe, and I looked down and one of my socks was off. Very odd. Run
Comments: Felt very good leaving T2. Ran blind without a watch or Garmin and had no idea of pace. Last year I pushed the swim and bike too hard and had nothing left for the run. This year I felt as though I saved for the run and was even conservative in this leg as I walked through the aid stations on the second half of the run and only felt as though I was pushing myself during the last 3/4 mile. I'm not a fast runner, and while 59+ minutes is considered very slow by some (most?), I was surprised and happy with my time, figuring that I had run about a 65 minute run leg. 15+ minute improvement on this leg alone from last year. I'm learning. What would you do differently?: Not walk through the aid stations, wear a watch, push a little harder, a little earlier Post race
Warm down: Laid down in the grass with the wet peak towel over my face while my daughters poured cold water all over me. Perfect! Then a swim in the reservoir out to the dock and back. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. I need to run more, bike more and race more. Event comments: What a difference a year makes. 23+ minute improvement from last year (had an 8 minute T1 last year though, so maybe "only" 18 minutes). Only problem is that I promised myself I would complete the tri series (Long Course) if I broke 3 hours. Still debating this one as I don't think I'm ready and I never want to feel after a race the way that I felt after last year's Peak. Might have to put off the Long Course until next year. Cloud cover came at the perfect time during the run. Thrilled with race but still see loads of opportunity for improvement. Last updated: 2009-01-02 12:00 AM
