Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30,6:30, and 7:30. (Ha ha ha. It doesn't seem to matter how comfortable I feel about the event, I still can't sleep the night before!) At a piece of toast and half a banana. Got to the Y early to see if I could be of any help. Couldn't.
Event warmup:

Ran from the water exit to the water entrance. Jumped up and down to get my heart rate up.
Swim
  • 06m 31s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

When the gun went off, I dove into the water. I saw our new friend Emily take off at a very fast pace. I had no idea where anyone else was.

I 's' swam a little bit on the way out, but not bad. Sighting was easy. I didn't swallow any water, and my breathing was good. Someone was near me rounding the buoy, but I don't know who it was, nor where they went after that.

Toward the end of the swim I decided to lengthen my stroke a little. That helped.
What would you do differently?:

I should have thought to relax and lengthen my stroke sooner. Otherwise it was a great swim!
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

I dried my legs, put my bike shoes on, grabbed my shirt and took off. This was a fast transition!
What would you do differently?:

I decided to use my SPDs this year to keep my feet from flying off the pedals. I don't think I'll do that next year. Maybe I can put cages on Tim's mountain bike instead. Running in bike shoes for nearly half a mile wasn't easy, and it hurt my overall time when I had to change into running shoes in T2.
Bike
  • 32m
  • 9 miles
  • 16.88 mile/hr
Comments:

I passed Emily (not DD) on Blacktail Road, very early in the course. Kept looking for the guys. I was sure there were three or four guys ahead of me, but I couldn't even see them.

When I got to the dismount area, I heard someone say, "Here comes the first bike." I was really surprised to find that I was the first one in!
What would you do differently?:

Pedal harder. I found myself enjoying the scenery a couple of times instead of giving my best effort. It was fun, though!

Remember to put my water bottle on my bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Apparantly they weren't ready to see me at the transition, so there was no one there to catch my bike. It wasn't a big deal, though. Someone eventually took it.

I got my running shoes on, but had forgotten my socks, so I had to start all over. Bah!
What would you do differently?:

Lay my socks on top of my shoes so that I can't forget them again.
Run
  • 28m 30s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where I got passed, but I'm used to it. One solo guy didn't change shoes, so he beat me out of T2. On my way out I saw a team rider come in. That runner eventually caught me. I also say Emily (my daughter) going in on the bike, and I knew she would eventually catch me. She caught me just before the turn around. She is a dedicated athlete, and a good runner.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I could have pushed harder, but I didn't need to. I knew I couldn't beat Emily at the run, and the next woman behind me was waaaaaay back, so I didn't need to.
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged my daughter, drank lots of water. Ate as much as I wanted to at the BBQ. Wahoo!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I haven't had a regular sleep pattern for over six weeks.

I should have just worn my running shoes for this race.

Event comments:

This is a very intimate (read-"tiny") race, but it is my home town! The BBQ provides the best post-race food of any race I go to.
