Pre-race routine:

Plan was to spend the night with Karla and Charles who live in Gainesville to save some time on the drive Sunday AM. Drew (and now Gabriella) came down with Strep and we had to change the plans last minute to make sure Drew was good so we just stayed at home.

He was feeling fine before bed so we all decided to go. Woke up at 4:30 left by 5:00, made it to the race site by 6:15, hit porta potties early, then to body marking, transition, etc.

Hoping weather was going to hold, raced in the rain at Hagerstown last weekend, hoping not to do that 2x in a row.
Event warmup:

Ate Peanut butter on toast, powerbar and drank some water before the race started.

Jumped in the water and swam out to the first turn buoy and back, lol last year I think by that time I had allready grabed a boat or two.

Some guy standing there on the boat ramp got a fishook caught in his foot, nasty...

Swim
  • 16m 43s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started right in the middle again. Found out from Montclair that all the bashing doesn't bother me in the least. People took off from the start and I just got into my pace and kept swimming. Actually was working on some things that I did in my lesson on Thursday so I swam a bit to the outside so I could work on those things instead of having to deal with the congestion.

Seemed like I caught up with everyone that took off sprinting, but based on my swim time guess I didn't catch up with as many as I thought.

As usual tried to draft for a bit but either people were too fast and swam away or too slow and I just swam around them.

Felt like a really good swim, not sure why the time was so slow though.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, last 2 OWS seemed to be much slower than I expected. Some said Montclair was long but with folks swiming this in 10 mins I doubt this one can be blamed on the course.

Will just keep hitting the pool (slacker month of July...) and try to get faster there. Finding out I like swiming in OWS much better than a pool these days.
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Long run out of T1, up a hill in the grass.
What would you do differently?:

Get running shoes that allow me to do sprints with no socks.
Bike
  • 49m 33s
  • 17 miles
  • 20.59 mile/hr
Comments:

ugh, 2nd setup event in a row where it seems there are just too many people out on the bike course. This wasn't nearly as bad as montclair but there seemed to be a steady stream of slower riders on the right so I pretty much stayed left the whole time.

I do like this bike course though, lots of rollers and some good descents, in the rain though and with so many people it was a bit sketchy in places. Hit one spot and back wheel came out a bit but got it straightened back out after a few choice explitives.

Got stuck behind a pickup truck at one point, lol he wasn't going fast enough to draft off of so I had to drop him : )

Started raining pretty good out there so had to slow it down a bit more, someone fell right at the turn into transition, they didn't look too hurt but the ambulance was heading out so had to manuver around that as well.

LOL not sure what course distance was listed but I went with last years 17 miles because the course was same as last year and even RD last year said it was longer than advertised.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get my overall power up a bit more. I can climb the big hills well, and descend well but those long sustained climbs kill my overall speed for a race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Didn't do a flying dismount, since I was wearing socks and it was a downhill run in the grass to transition I just kept my bike shoes on, still a decent transition though.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear socks.
Run
  • 26m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs just felt heavy for the run, 100+ miles run in July might have something to do with it. Wasn't really trying to set any records here so just took it easy.

My legs opened up about 2 miles into the run so I opened it up quite a bit and started to pass some people that had run away from me earlier.
What would you do differently?:

In the midst of MCM training my legs don't seem to start up for a bit so not much I could.
Post race
Warm down:

Saw Sam and the kids and by that time it was raining pretty good so went straight to transition and grabbed my stuff and left.

Headed out and got some breakfast then drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wasn't really trying to do much of anything here. Didn't have a plan other than crushing last years race time.

Event comments:

Last year (swim killed the rest of my race, first OWS)
Swim 28:03 (46/50 AG, 332/338 Overall)
Bike 59:29 (36/50 AG, 228/338 Overall)
Run 30:56 (41/50 AG, 287/338 Overall)

So very happy with my improvements from last year, especially since I had no real plan for this race. Still a lot to work on but good to see overall improvements since this is my last Tri of the year.

Maybe get one more in between now and Lonestar HIM in April 2010

Now onto running and Road racing...
