Swim
Comments: I felt pretty good about my swim. I even managed to draft for a little ways, and I felt like I navigated a lot straighter than usual. My time was a lot slower than I expected, so obviously room for improvement. What would you do differently?: Continue to improve my stroke and my endurance. Transition 1
Comments: I felt pretty good here. I was able to get past some people before I jumped on my bike. I swung a leg over and pushed off to get going before I clipped in, so I am getting a little faster on the mount. What would you do differently?: I probably could have been a little faster from the water to T1, but it was a long way! I can also improve my bike mount and take-off speed. Bike
Comments: This was a pretty challenging course. I was disappointed with my overall pace. I also needed to take in a bit more nutrition/fluids on the bike to be better prepped for the run. What would you do differently?: I need to build more climbing strength. I was able to pass a lot of people going downhill, but I was passed by a lot of people going up. Transition 2
Comments: I was especially happy with this transition. No fumbles. Second fastest in my age group and 12th fastest overall. What would you do differently?: Remember to grab the second gel off my bike if I haven't taken it already. Run
Comments: I was surprised that I ranked as well as I did here because it did not feel like a good run. There was one hill on the return, in full sun, where my respiration started to get out of control. I had to walk for quite a while on that hill the second time to recover. I don't think I stayed hydrated enough and the heat was a big factor at the end. I did not keep track of walk breaks, but I was liberal with them! I poured a lot of water over my head trying to cool down. What would you do differently?: I need to drink more on the bike, and perhaps on the run. I also forgot to take my second gel and didn't drink much of the Perpetuum, so my calorie intake may have been too low. I need to keep experimenting with this. Post race
Warm down: I walked for quite a while and drank an entire bottle of water and an entire Gatorade. Then I sat and chatted w/ some other competitors for a while before getting my dry clothes and seeking out a shower. I stretched while I waited in the shower line. What limited your ability to perform faster: My fitness, the extra weight I have gained since Mooseman, and the heat. Event comments: This was a really tough course; definitely the most challenging that I have done so far. But it was a lot of fun and very well run. The scenery in Luray is absolutely beautiful. The post-race snacks were fair, but there was plenty available. I loved that they had a live band afterward. Last updated: 2009-01-06 12:00 AM
