Age Group Rank = 189/394
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3am -
Coffee, PB on whole wheat bagel, yogurt, banana.
Huge downpour while in the car at 4:30 - waited for rain to let up and walked to transition. Luckily brought a flashlight.

Event warmup:

Long walk to swim-start.
Swim
  • 18m 29s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, stayed far right to avoid the crowd, still ended up hitting feet and having mine hit...no problems. I couldn't stick to my 3/1 breathing. Breathing every other stroke and was changing sides every couple of minutes. Felt much stronger this year compared to last year. I dodn't have to flip to my back to catch my breath and didn't feel like I was overheating due to the sleeveless top.
No jellyfish!
What would you do differently?:

Not swim on top of the guy swimming on his back...I almost starting laughing.
Transition 1
  • 10m 13s
Comments:

Stopped for coffee and a cigarette, followed by a quick nap. (j/k)
I cannot explain the transition time...wtf?
What would you do differently?:

apparently everything!
Bike
  • 1h 19m 16s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Exactly 15 seconds faster than last year. Wet roads, some large puddles, slower riders on the left side that didn't want to move, some headwind on the way back and an annoying guy that drafted for what felt like 70% of the ride...on my wheel.
Transition 2
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

I need transition help!
Run
  • 55m 34s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt like lead - had family waiting along 72nd...had to look strong.
Passed them, high-fived the wife and kids. As I approached the park, felt some cramps coming...thought about walking but the crowds were too thick and encouraging to stop there. Once in the park, cramp feelings went away. I paced with a runner on my left and chatted while we ran, nice pace, didn't want to stop there either. As we approached a long hill...I wished her well and let her go...as she pulled away, I noticed her IM tat on her calf...I was inspired to keep running. I only walked towards the end of the long steep uphill and at the last hydration station. Rounding the end, sudden boost of adrenaline...felt like a strong finish.
What would you do differently?:

Last year, I said I would practice running in the park...it never happened.
I lived downtown where it's mostly flat - I train hills on the Brooklyn Bridge. I need to run Central Park more!
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with the family...walked the expo...put the family in the car...went to transition to pick up my stuff and rode home - WITH THE MEDAL AROUND MY NECK!

Event comments:

Great race - my 2nd year - will try to do next year. This one sold out in 22 minutes. I can't imagine the chaos next year!
