Swim
Comments: Well what can I say - I swim like a turtle. I hope one day to be a bit faster in the pool b/c unless I just float, I can't be any slower. What would you do differently?: Go faster Transition 1
Comments: I was good in T1 - not much fumbling. This time is an approx. b/c the race combines the swim and T1 times in the results. But I remember looking at my watch leaving the pool so I have a pretty good idea of what is what. T1 is longer b/c you have to walk down 3 flights of stairs to the outside or you are DQ. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Comedy seems to follow my life. So I am determined to ride hard on the bike b/c it's my strongest sport at the moment and I'm trying hard to get up to 20mph avg for races. The course is pretty flat w/ a few small rollers but there are a few funky sections that look flat or a very minimal uphill but they are harder then they look to carry real speed. So I'm cruising along 21-22 mph avg and very pleased that I feel good and my legs weren't suffering from my long ride yesterday. All of a sudden I start slowing down. My legs are starting to burn and I am losing speed fast but still working as hard. I drop to 15-16 mph and think what the F. Then I think sh*t, I have a flat. So I stop and get off my bike to check my tires - no flat. And then I realized I have gotten to one of these weirds spots that just sucks the speed out of you. So I get back on, adjust my gears and try to push through. I decide to nickname that part of the trail, the doldrums. At the turn around, there is a road biker not part of the race hanging out. He rides off just as I am making the turn at the cone. After a few seconds, he rides up beside me and says ... If you want to bend the rules a bit, I'll pull you. I laugh, thank him but say no thanks, I'm ok. He rides off leaving me in the dust to work my sorry butt off. The rest of the ride was fine except for the doldrums section. What would you do differently?: Not much - I was almost at 19mph so I was happy. Legs felt great. Transition 2
Comments: Good T2 - I kind of threw my helmet and it hit the ground. I should be careful w/ that. What would you do differently?: Not much - first sub 1 min. transition. Run
Comments: I am still struggling to get the legs moving after the bike. They were so tight and my breathing/HR was way up for the first mile. I was also trying to push it hard so I didn't take my usual easy first mile. When there is only 2 why bother. I was also pushing hard to make my goal which I thought was 1:24:12. What would you do differently?: Keep working on bike/run transition. Get stronger. Post race
Warm down: Got a bottle water and rode back to the start area. T1 and T2 are not in the same place. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing today. I had the wrong number in my head so I thought I had beat my goal by 6 sec. but I really beat it by 2 min. and 6 sec. Great race for me. Event comments: A nice local well run race but low turnout. I think better advertising would help. I had fun and the snacks afterwards at the gym were nice. They also did a great job on keeping people spaced in the pool. There was very little backup. Got up way too early - the race started at 6am. Didn't eat much since I was not able to get my usual pre-race bagel for the morning. Wasn't really worried though since it was just a sprint distance.
I rode my bike over to transition (0.25m) just to make sure everything felt ok. Got in the pool and swam 150m to try and get the blood flowing. Took some Advil to make sure I was feeling fresh since I had done a 2 1/2 hr. bike ride the day before.
