Swim
Comments: Very happy with this swim. Water was murky so visibility was pretty poor. I kept bumping bodies in front of me that were stopping suddenly. Not much contact though overall. Did the whole thing without stopping which was a good accomplishment for me as this was my first swim of this distance in competition. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: I have just one word for you - PAM! As funny as it sounds, I've read that this is safe for wetsuits and is very slippery. I sprayed it on my lower legs and forearms and the wetsuit slipped right off. It is now a permanent addition to my transition bag. What would you do differently?: Nothing, but I need more practice. Bike
Comments: This is a good, fast course. I beat my goal time but still suffered a little by not doing much speed training the last few weeks. Nutrition was perfect. This race was my first real test of all liquid nutrition with Infinit. I felt like I nailed it. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 2
Comments: Went pretty well. Could still shave a few seconds off this with practice. I did drop my race number belt trying to put it on and I also paused a few seconds to make sure I didn't forget anything. That didn't add much though. What would you do differently?: Not drop my RNB. Otherwise nothing. Run
Comments: This course was far tougher than I was expecting. I did have a good run, especially considering this was my first half marathon in competition, but it was definitely tough. My garmin had total elevation gain of about 1450 feet. By comparison, total elevation gain on the bike over the whole 56 miles was about 1950 feet. What would you do differently?: Not forget my run visor. I think it made me heat up a little more than usual. Otherwise nothing. Post race
Warm down: Walked around. Took a dip in the lake. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training and inexperience. Event comments: Disappointed with many things about the race. My wife and brother's girlfriend did the sprint and didn't get medals. Kind of petty it seems. That's not a good place to try and save money if you want people coming back. Post race food left a lot to be desired. There were also some questionable issues with organization of waves, lack of swim caps, etc. It was fun but I probably won't be back. Woke up in the morning and had my coffee and bagel with cream cheese. Went to pump up the tires before leaving the house and busted the valve. I had to change my tube before even leaving the house. Not a good start to my first half-ironman race. Thankfully it was the only glitch in my day. Got to the race site, set up without being rushed, and just hung out waiting to start.
Just a short swim to get the arms loose. I totally think this little warm up is key to the success I have had in my last 2 race swims.
