Pre-race routine:

Ate a banana and wrote my best 5K time in the palm of my hand. Matt & I drove to the race site. My stomach was bothering me, I was hoping to PR this race, but realized that might just be a pipe-dream based on the tummy moaning. Nothing exciting but we did valet park at the Hyatt. Valet parking for a race....yep that's a first!

I was not expecting to have to valet park, so I got out of the car with my cell phone in my jacket pocket.
Event warmup:

Walked to the starting line from the hotel. It was freezing! My teeth were chattering. Tons of fog, it felt like the Bay Area rather than So Cal. Before the gun for my group I took the phone out of my pocket, I knew it would annoy me to run with, so I held it in my hand during the race.

Comments:

They started us in waves about 2 minutes apart. Good concept and it seemed to work well. I was hoping to PR, but really did not think it would happen with my stomach bothering me. I stood in the 8-10 Min/mile pace group.

Off we went and I was feeling good, not great but comfortable in my pace. It was interesting because there was a 1/2 mary and full mary taking place at the same time. I hit the first mile mark at 5 minutes! WTF!?!? That elation lasted about 2 seconds and I realized the mile marker was for one of the other races.

I hit the real 1st mile marker at 9:02, not bad and not great either. Continued to run and weave my way through the mass of people on the course. It was a flat out and back along the beach......there was sooooo much fog I did not even see the beach or the ocean! Wound up reaching mile 2 at 18:20 and tummy was really not feeling happy. I realized that in order to PR I would need to hit the finish line by running about an 8 min/mile....that was not happening today.

At that moment I passed a group of Marines on their way out (no clue why they started in a slowed wave than me). I immediately thought of so many people that would love to have the ability to run, to complete 5K regardless of the time. I thought of those competing the wheelchair division and of so many people that will never know the elation and sense of accomplishment of crossing the finish-line. I decided to enjoy the rest of the run and did not look at my watch again until I crossed the finish line.

I wound up finishing a minute slower than my fastest 5k. HOWEVER.....I am thrilled with how well I placed in this race!
Overall: 446 out of 2511
Women: 173 out of 1626
F 30-34: 26 out of 290

I NEVER place this high in races!!!
What would you do differently?:

If my stomach was feeling better, I may have been a bit faster, but I don't think this race would have been a PR for me anyway. The legs were not feeling it.
Post race
Warm down:

I got my finisher's pic taken and walked around the race expo. Made my way to the finisher's line crowd and watched Matt complete his first Half-Mary.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach issues

Event comments:

I would run this one again, but keep my fingers crossed that the sun would be shining during my race.....it was COLD!
