Swim
Comments: Once chipped three of us got in and managed a few warm-up laps. Talked order, gained a 4th swimmer, all registered 6:40-6:45. Then we got a 5th at 7:00. Worked out OK b/c everyone but the 5th was on their times, and all 5 discussed passing protocol before the start I starte din the three slot and draft off the #2 guy, who drafted off the woman in #1. #4 dropped off the pace and #5 stopped at the right time for 1-3 to pass. Worked well. Neglected to gu ~15-20 before swim start, #1 What would you do differently?: Get to the pool earlier for warm-up, the August S-M-D will probably run the same way. Transition 1
Comments: Got to the rack (I'm the only road bike on my rack, seems everyone else had/has a tri bike) Wood multi-purpose racks, too small for the number of racers and tight quarters between as well. Grabbed towel and quick-mopped, drink, helmet on, feet in socks(baby powder reduces stickiness - thanks, BT thread!), feet in shoes, sunglasses on, drink, grab bike and I'm right next to the bike mat. Out, cross the mount line, left foot on, up and onto the road course. What would you do differently?: skip the toweling off, worthless time; have a separate bottle handy so I don't wrestle with the caged one on the bike; have a gu/energy taped to bike or in back jersey pocket. Practice. My friend Keri in the next rack was in and out of T1 in 1:00, what took me so much longer? Bike
Comments: corners were coned fairly tight, no getting around that. Thighs were singing a bit on the hills, and I had the thought that I *should* be able to push a harder gear on the inclines, amounts to a training time & volume issue. What would you do differently?: More saddle time. Transition 2
Comments: Helmet off, bike shoes off, drink, into running shoes quickly (thanks to the Yankz, thanks again for the tip Grace!), drink, racebelt on, go. Ignored the gu thought, it was right there but I'd be done in <30 minutes, right? What would you do differently?: Nothing, in and out ~ 1 minute works. OK, maybe use the spare bottle idea from above since it will be at hand. Run
Comments: 1st few strides leaving T2 my left lower back was stiff enough I had the self-schadenfreude to note this was the price for not practicing transition runs off my own bike in favor of doing them off the trainer/spin bikes at the rec center. Practice how you'll race, right? Legs felt heavy as expected, I felt drained as expected, I was probably under-hydrated and under fueled at this point, more of that self-schadenfreude (is there a proper word for that?) I made at least ten people look pretty good on the run. Approaching the turn-around with my left leg cramp kicking in, I submitted and broke stride. Hadn't seen her since befor ethe swim start, but immediately I hear my friend Keri not 10 feet behind me, "C'mon buddy!" So much for slacking off completely. What would you do differently?: Start hydrating alot earlier. Train to Run more. Post race
Warm down: walked off, drank gatorade, walked more, stretched a little What limited your ability to perform faster: My ability to perform faster was limited by my ability to run faster and better; 2ndly saddle time... Event comments: Wrinkles included no notice on body marking the night before and chip distribution at pool. The former, I showed up wearing narrow cut jeans that I knew from prior experience (stream wading at Great Sand Dunes) they weren't going above my knee; the latter, it cost warm-up time based on how it was handled. Transition area was kinda cramped after the swim, not bad by the run. No clock at the end, due to wave start with hand-held computer. Last updated: 2009-01-13 12:00 AM

7 hours sleep, up at 4:05 after waking completely once in the middle of the night; fitful but OK. Juice, egg/saus/cheese sandwich, 3/4 cup coffee for bfast. Off to Westridge @ 4:40a
Drive tunes on the radio: People Get Ready, Ziggy & the MelodyMakers; Learnig nto Fly, Goo Goo dolls. The latter popped in my head on the bike downhillls. Arrived at 5am
In retrospect the time to start hydrating for a race is when I wake up; no, the day/night before. This mattered at around 7:05, when my left lower leg started cramping in the run.
After setting up I jogged x2 the T1 path from the pool doors to my bike rack, (timed it at 1:08). Also did some stretching. Had planned to do more swimming than time allowed due to chip distribution at poolside. The guy overseeing it insisted on having everyone present and in order, before anyone got a chip adn then only in order. Probably stood in line for 15 minutes waiting wanting to be turning laps.
