Total Time = 1h 09m 24s
Overall Rank = 87/929
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 20/116
Pre-race routine:

egg breakfast and protein shake and coffee
Event warmup:

short jog, short swim. no time to get bike warm-up
Swim
  • 06m 11s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

crowded, got stuck towards back of pack in start and had to fight through people. need to improve sighting/drafting
What would you do differently?:

start closer to front and go out stronger for first 100, then ease up and cruise
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

put shoes on in transition and then ran with them which seems to work OK. put socks on, which takes a little while. really struggled with getting suit off without falling over.
What would you do differently?:

work on getting suit off better. use feet to step on it. maybe try training without socks and go without next time. may start trying to have bike shoes on bike already
Bike
  • 39m
  • 15 miles
  • 23.08 mile/hr
Comments:

pace was faster than I thought it would be. Looking back, may have been able to push a little harder. course was fairly crowded and so was spending a lot of time passing. lots of people drafting (not intentionally) because of how crowded. narrow course at beginning and end made passing difficult.
ate GU at turnaround. drank 1 bottle along way. calfs totally cramped 2/3 of way through and continued to cramp off and on, OUCH! fought through, tried to stretch while riding downhill
What would you do differently?:

push a little harder
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

dismounted bike when stationary, ran with bike shoes on then took off when at transition. transition spot was at far end (meant having to run bike all the way through transition area). took a good long drink before heading out.
What would you do differently?:

learn how to get out of shoes while still on bike and dismount when moving. hopefully get a better transition spot.
Run
  • 20m 9s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

didn't drink any at midway, just had the drink before heading out. don't think I needed to drink as it was pretty cool. uneven footing on grass portions difficult, hard to get speed up without worrying about ankle sprain. had more left for final sprint down the stretch than I thought I would, obviously left some in the tank.
What would you do differently?:

push a little harder, probably paced myself too slow.
Post race
Warm down:

walk

What limited your ability to perform faster:

calf cramps on bike, poor first transition, getting caught in back of swim and not pacing fast enough on run

Event comments:

a lot of fun. lots of people.
